Hi, just wondering if there is an optimum time/ cut-off time for getting a sports massage before a race? I seem to remember a post on this last year advising not to get one too soon before a race, but can't remember the reasons given.
I'm getting one this week with two weeks to go now before the Cork City Marathon. Legs really need it after the last of the LSR's.

    Mr.W~

The week of a race is fine normally I would say 3-4 day prior to a big race. The reason being is that some of the techniques used fatigue the muscles in the short term but are of benefit in the more medium term. I would always say it takes about 2-3 days before you feel the full benefits.
If you are not used to getting massage then I would aim to take the extra day just to be safe

Thanks , Had the same query myself, Touch wood have only had to visit the physio once since I started running, that was after DCM 12 when I needed help to walk again! Planning on getting a rub down this week as would like to freshen the legs prior to Cork. However I don't know if its worth doing it or not and also don't want to be tempting fate by going to physio as I know a lot of people would give anything to not have to be visiting them.

Got a massage from a chap recommended/well supported by the local runing club , during the week. Legs absolutely black and blue the day after. Calf's still really sore 4 days after it. Was gonna get another one early next week, but will give it a miss. Hope the resting next week will ease the pain.
