about a year i started counselling however the counsellor only wants to focus on the here and now getting me to take medication(which i am not sure about) but doenst want me to talk the past at all. i know we are allowed to talk about medical stuff on here but is this usual? she has also me me that it my choice shr didnt say it so bluntly but i think she meant i can eith think about the past or go out and do something. has anyone ehre had similiar experiences?

    Hi there,

Sounds like you have a lot to deal with and it's great that you are getting help.

I can't say that I have similar experience. However, what you are describing is a particular approach to counselling. There are all different approaches for example gestalt therapy may focus on here and now whereas an analytic therapy may focus on the past. The approach can depend on the counselor.

It is important that you find a therapy that is right for you. If you feel this doesn't suit, don't be afraid to discuss this with therapist or even change therapists if you have given it a go and it doesn't feel right.

I can't really advice on medication really. I'm sorry about that.

One thing I would say though is listen to your instincts. If you feel you have a story that you need to tell, that's important.

Best of luck and be sure to post back and tell us how things progress for you.

Different counsellors work in different ways. There was one guy I went to who I found extremely unhelpful, who tried to pigeon-hole me into a certain box so that he could do whatever he does with that box. I hated that approach, but someone else I know went to the same guy and thought he was great.

You may need to shop around a bit to find someone who suits you. Not all therapy is lying on a leather chaise longe, going through your past with a fine tooth comb. Maybe that's what you need, maybe not, but you'll need to figure that one out for yourself.

    Good luck! :)
