Why is a brand new laptop so slow?

I've got a brand new Dell laptop. I'm no laptop expert, hence why I'm on here, but I'm not sure it's meant to be this slow.

I'll be using it for work and my work requires me to work with speed, often using multiple windows and at the moment, the level of performance does not suggest it will work to an acceptable level.

I've put iTunes on it, and Adobe reader and all that jazz but surely they aren't significant additions relative to the amount of space a new laptop should have.

After checking the specs, it appears to only have 1GB of RAM with a Celeron Dual-core CPU - T3500 @ 2.10 GHz 2.09 GHz.

Do these statistics suggest it shouldn't be any faster than it is, or is there anything I can do to speed it up?

    Cheers.

The RAM is your main issue. 1GB of RAM is only enough for XP, let alone Vista, 7 or 8. You'd want 4GB minimum. The processor's not great either.

I'm not saying I don't believe you, but that's an incredibly low spec for a new laptop. Also, manufacturers tend to install loads of crap on their machines out of the box, wouldn't be a bad idea to wipe and reload it from a generic install disc if you could.

With 1GB of RAM, it is always going to be slow.

You will be able to minorly improve speed by removing some of the Dell branded crapware that's installed and getting a better AV than whatever trial they supply but you really, really need at least 2GB and preferably 4GB RAM. I'd guess its a 32bit laptop that won't benefit from more than 4.

edit: Where did you get it and what's the model? Dell seem to have 4GB in their lowest spec systems now, but Dell branded machines in PC shops can be months to years old.

I got it off my da. It was his but he literally only used it a couple of times before going off the idea of becoming computer-savvy. It's three or four months old, which should still qualify as 'brand new' but f*ck knows why there's only 1 thing of RAM on there. That's odd isn't it.

    It's a Dell Vostro.

If I can't dramatically improve it - which I absolutely need to - then on to the next question: How much is new RAM?

What version of Windows is on it / what model number is it?

Vostros are higher end and wouldn't have had 1GB any time recently.

RAM is very cheap. look at crucial.com or memoryc.com - the latter are Irish and hence stuff arrives within a day or two.

Some Vostros are presently being sold with 2GB of RAM so not impossible that a 4 month old computer has 1 GB. Poor show by Dell though.

You can go into the Dell site and type in your service tag number ( back of laptop) and the details of your laptop will come up.
