What are the oil levels like ? Is it burning much?

    Blue smoke is usually oil

In the vag TDI engines it can be a symptom of many things - from burning a little too much oil to a turbo on the way out.

    Get her checked out imo

Oil levels fairly normal .. just a big noticeable puff of blue smoke when I start her up from cold

It's probably nothing to worry about really.it's probably big enough mileage i'd say is it? Just keep an eye on oil levels .

    138,000 miles

    not bad for the age

Not too shabby at all. At that mileage i'd be giving her good regular oil changes.Give it a fighting chance.

just when I go in tomorrow would he be correct if he said with the age of the car sometimes a bit of blue smoke is normal ...or should I stand firm ?

It could be age but it really depends on the exact colour of the smoke.

I have a 00 TDI. I got it at 152,000 miles and it is at 192,000 now and the first start of the morning always has a small puff of smoke. It is a greyish with a tint of blue. Once the engine has been running for a short while each start up for the rest of the day is perfect and there is no smoke under load ever. Only during the first start up of the day.

I know for a fact that the coolant temp sensors are a bit dodgy on my wagon, which could be telling the ECU to put too much diesel into the engine during startup. My glow plugs dont really activate even in quite cold conditions. Something I keep meaning to fix. Anyway, the main point of this paragraph is that our generation of TDI did suffer from less than perfect temp sensors which only gives problems on cold first time startups.

Check if the engine produces smoke under load. Get into second gear and floor it up a slight to fair incline if possible from around 1200 RPM or there abouts. Change gear at 3000 or just before and see if anything pops up in the rear mirrors. Or you could keep it in neutral and rev it a bit to see what happens.

I would have thought if it was oil problem, it would be smoking consistently during running. Or, at least consistently while the engine is cold.

The peeps over at TDIClub forums say even new diesels do this from cold.

no smoke during running and I got the wife to drive it while I followed so the car got a good lot of revs etc and no smoke ...just in the mornings or when cold (from)

Blue smoke is oil. Possibly the oil seals on the turbo are going

On startup black smoke is overfuelling, greyish white smoke is glow plugs
