Typical Chipped tooth costs

    Hi all,

Rang round a few dentists and none of them can give me a fixed cost for dental work. I can understand why this is so, given that they havent actually seen the tooth yet.

    So, here are the facts:

Front tooth small chip on it. Not really noticable but would prefer it fixed anyhow (chipped with a dessert spoon).

So, one small chip, what would I expect to pay for composite to fill this in?

Im not interested in any x-rays - I'll take the chance if there's further damage to the tooth.

I'm hearing prices "from" €150 at one dentist, €100 at another.

Just interested to know your experiences given that this isnt something I can really select from a menu without having to sit in the chair.

As pricing goes, I feel, as a consumer, I could be walking into this blind without ringing around. Ultimately the cost depends on the dentist's fees are. However, when I ask for a figure I can't get one, as it depends.

So, how can I shop around with a "depends" pricing structure?

I wonder if the chip in your tooth be solved by the dentist carefully filing the tooth to get a better appearance? I believe this is called "dental contouring".

I had a very minor unevenness on one tooth. My dentist greatly improved its appearance simply by filing it very slightly. I don't think he even charged me for it.

Any of the dentists on here with views on dental contouring, pros, cons, price etc?

Chipped one of my teeth few years back. Dentist took x-ray, i asked was that really necessary, he replied he would not do any work on me without an x-ray.

Similar to going to A&E with a possible broken bone, and i just say, just put the plaster on and forget x-ray. Would they do that, not a chance.

I would presume there'd be some sort of negligent action if they just filled it and didnt check anything else despite it being your wishes and thats why its xray or nothing.

    (not a dentist)!

Good point, never considered that angle.

    I'll factor that in so.

If you dont have a regular dentist expect to pay for an examination, cleaning and the filling. Thats what your need. If the filling is very small the dentist may charge very little for it. When you have a dentist you see regularly, they can take care of these things without examinations as they know your teeth.

    Thanks Fitzgeme,

What should I be asking for when I ring up to enquire about fees (assuming I don't have a regular dentist): A consultation for a chipped tooth along with possible x-ray charges?
    Or

A consultation along with possible x-ray charges?

    Cheers

Chances are you need your teeth checked, and X-rays if you havent been to the dentist in a while. A cleaning is always a good thing. Ask when you make the appointment, that you need a small filling on a front tooth and you would appreciate if the dentist could do it at the same time. The dentist may charge less as its one appointment.

Choose a dentist that you can go to regularly. If work move around choose one near home.
