i beleive it's 30 years from date of first registration, but my 87 Transit was built in 1985...have I a case for classic tax from 2015 rather than 2017?

I'd imagine the revenue would only be interested in date of first registration for their purposes. Don't know for certain though.

i know in the UK if you can prove your vehciale as built before the cut off date, they will happily use that date to determine classic status, just wondered if anyone had done the same here.

Is it not reg'd as a camper for ~€90?

it's €95 i think.... yes, but i'm not really talking about specifics.

It's date of first registration - my E30 was built in Jan 83 but was only eligible from the 30th anniversary of its first registration, which was March.

No, legislation here is 30 years from date of first registration.

If a vehicle has no papers and is dated only to the year, then 1st January of that year is recorded.

I have heard of this in the UK too, but it was to bring a car/van back into December '72 for tax purposes. I'm not sure about in the case of the rolling exemption here, but I can't see them accepting a manufacture date..

Yes ,they accept the manufacturing date if its on the v5 or export document.
You will get 1/1/85, you will need to tell the guy in the NCT as they tend to overlook it.

might make it cheaper for VRT (forlorn hope.....will have to sell it if the horror stories I hear about VRT on campers proves to be true....13.3% of OMSP, based on what a dealer would sell it for....

i could have told you that, my question was has anyone had this arguement with the Revenue

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 2,913 Mod ✭✭✭✭macplaxton

There's no need to have an argument with the Revenue.

From I think the 1992 Finance Act S.130.
    “listed vehicle” means one of the following vehicles, namely, an ambulance, a hearse, a bus, a special purpose vehicle, an agricultural tractor, a two-wheeled tractor, a fire engine, a fire-escape, a road sweeper, an invalid carriage, an armoured fighting vehicle, or a vehicle (not including a motor-cycle) which is shown to the satisfaction of the Commissioners to be more than 30 years old at the time of registration;
So I backpedal a little from my previous position to hi5's. Satisfy the Revenue Commissioners and there is no argument.

(Can't at the moment find the piece of legislation/Revenue procedure about the 1st January where only the year is known. I've read it from some reliable source some time in the past.)

like, bend over you mean? might work.... :-)

It's not the 30 year thing I'm thinking of, it's whether I can get it registered as a 1985...it doesn't look likely but it might mean the OMSP was a little lower.

Anyway, watch this space, I would guess I'll be appealing and this will be one ground I shall try, that it's a Project is another

Well if the paperwork says so then no problem. TBH, you'll have more joy with the DVLA than the NCTS.

well paperwork can be got, which is what you'd do in the UK.

my Golf, originally registered in Cork in Feb '83 was actually built in Germany in Nov '81. I tried to argue the point with the lady on the counter in the local tax orifice just to see how much confusion I could raise. It was an exercise in divilment more than anything, I knew I was on a loser.

She was having none of it and I had to wait til the end of February this year to get it swapped to classic status. No biggie...

thanks Trevor, thats what I wanted to know (or actually didn't want to know)

anyway I'm propeer peeved today, as the NCT want me to get an engineers report as the V5C says it's a Panel Van although it was built new as a Camper ...doh...definately selling it once I've finished jumping through hoops....
