MD Seve Icon wedges, your thoughts?

    Hey all,

Last year I replaced my defunct and ancient Vokey wedges, for a full new set of MD Seve Icon wedges. I love having good, comfortable wedges. If a wedge doesn't feel right in the hand, it is a major pain in the hole.

After looking around and reading some reviews, and thought of users both here and generally online, the MD Seve Icon wedges got some rave reviews. Cheap and affordable, users indicated they could get good spin and check and they had some lovely weight.

I've been using these wedges now, for close to a year. I have a 52*, 56* and 60*. I have to say, I'm unsure a year on if I have been happy with them, and if I would recommend them. I've found the gap wedge insanely difficult to judge and get a good strike, feeling it to heavy on impact. I've reverted to a more controled, varied pitching wedge instead of it.
For the lob wedge, well in fairness it's a lob wdge, it gets used twice a month at best.

The sand wedge is for me an important club. It is what I use from about 60 yards in, and around the greens. I have a locker of shots with a SW and one of them, an old reliable, is a nice checked bump from around the greens to get up and down. I've found this wedges to be wildly inaccurate and extremely difficult to get spin and check when required, where as my vokeys it was on demand.

I was just wondering if anyone has some thoughts on them? I know when I was looking to buy they were relatively new out I think, so I'm just wondering was there a little bit of quick honeymoon period on these, or if people have actually being generally satisifed.

I don't see any equipment buys for the rest of the year, although I've been toying with the idea of replacing my wedges.

    Cheers,
    Doc

Do you MDs have the same bounce, offset as your Vokeys?
It might explain some of the variance if you are not comparing like with like.

How can you be so sure it's the arrows and not the indian?.

Did your old Vokeys have the older, deeper & sharper grooves ? And presumably, if they were bought last year, the MDs have the newer conforming grooves ?
This will make that bump and spin shot much more difficult to play.

I found the same thing with the new grooves on the SM4 Vokeys, couldn't check them nearly as much as my older Callaway X-Tours. FWIW the new Callaway Forged wedges seem, for me, to spin a bit more than the SM4 Vokeys but the leading edges are a tad sharp IMO.

Well I just feel that's the issue. Something weird about them that is hard to explain

Thats a fair point, my Vokeys were the first gen afaik.

While I realise there might be LESS spin and less check, I don't see how it could be gone entirely.

Well I went out yesterday and used my Da's Callaway wedge, with McDaddy grooves. Literally a huge difference. Using the same swing and technique I was back getting my check and hitting the shots around the green I want to, giving myself great chances of getting up and down.

Think these Seve Wedges are going up on Adverts.

I don't know why I thought that a Wedge by MD could be any use, maybe the reviews from posters here were a bit skewered in terms of handicapp and also the fact they were so cheap, but definitely not a great wedge imo. No idea why I ever thought buying a non top brand wedge would be a good idea haha :D

I found the MD wedges gave me more spin than the vokeys that came after them. Maybe since the grove change they are not as good.

Yeah Mike this is what people kept referring to, that they got more spin then their Vokeys.

Now these comments I was reading last year, groove change was before that no?

I don't get where the rave reviews came from. Handed them to a friend who is a 4 handicapper and I LOVE the way he makes a golf ball dance on the green, and he was struggling with them.

For the money I'd be selling them for doubt what people would expect. Like they are an OK wedge in a sense they have some decent weight, good response from a long distance shot.

But when you are around the green trying to be delicate , they feel clumsy and just don't give the end product I want.

Trying to find how much I bought them for to figure out how much I should sell them for. Problem being now I am now in the negative mindset with them, and will probably have to use them for a while longer until I get replacements.

(In saying that I've not taking my gap wedge out this year, and my lob wedge once, so might sell all three to fund one new 56* )

Halpenny have a sale on at the moment where Callaway Jaw wedges are going for €69. Got a text this evening inviting me to the loyalty club evening as well with further discounts. So will pickup a new 56* tonight I think.

Coin toss between Callaway Jaw Edge or a Titleist Vokey. The 2011 models they are shifting for €79.

Considering I have not taken my gap wedge out of the bag this year, and my lob wedge twice, I'm weirdly turning against the 4 wedge policy. Seems I'm making all the shots I need from 70yrds+ with my Pitching wedge.

Anyone any experience with the Callaway wedges? I've had vokeys before and they were lovely, hearing alot of goof things about these "McDaddy" wedges

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭DuckSlice

The Mack-daddy grooves are the non conforming ones, the 'jaws cc' is the competition conforming grooves, and I think they have more groves aswell, like 21 aswell, supposed to get serious spin off them!

There both supposed to be good wedges, I have the new Calloway forged wedge on order and expecting delivery from mcguirks soon, got it for 70 euro!

Personally, I think Callaway wedges are light years ahead of Vokeys. Obviously that's just my opinion, thousands of people love their Vokeys, but for me, if I had to, I could use Vokeys with no problem, but much prefer the feel of the Callaways. After all, they're really Cleveland wedges ;)

Well due to an unshakable deal from Halpenny golf, I now own a 52 and 56 Cleveland 588 Rotex wedges.

Like literally the deal I got, I'd say the sales guy is in serious trouble

I have the older Cleveland wedges and love them, so much easier and controllable than Vokeys (again personal opinion). If you got a great deal then should be happy days around the green for you

You can tell all that from just one round?, how do you know you're not just experiencing the feel good/placebo effect one usually gets with new purchases.

I use the MD Norman Drew wedges, find them as good as anything else I've used.

My wedge play and general approach shots has been the same shape and swing, and mindset, since I was 14.

The big problem with the MD wedges was lack of spin and bad feel and control, they felt like a blunt object on a shaft.

Two rounds with the new wedges and I can already see the spin, the improved control and the great feel.

Have also benefited from the Cleveland offer, traded two very old wedges that were rotting away in the garage for 2 new RTG's.

    Cleveland-588-RTG-Forged-Wedge-640x360.jpg

Very happy with them. My biggest concern in giving up my non-conforming vokeys was that I would lose out on spin, but that hasn't been the case at all, getting just as much if not more.

Have previously used the low bounce MD's and found them good as well, but feel like I could be a Cleveland advocate for a while now...

Went out to practice strictly wedges, absolutely lethal stuff from around the green and approach shots. A whole new world of confidence just came abck to my game.

And for anyone who doesn't know, you can trade in ANY wedge for €30 of a new Cleveland 588, which are on sale at present in most places for €75. So €35 , this is a steal

*didnt think I wanted/needed new wedges till I started reading this thread*

Could someone say something good about Mizuno wedges and save me a few quid. Cheers.

The guy in the shop said they would drop down into the €70s, they were marked €129 when I bought them.

My pro shop is doing them for €75, I'd assume others will follow suit.

Everywhere the deal for €30 trade in is applicable

Went into Halpenny in Swords today, guy there seemed to know nothing about any trade in deal. So another few rounds with the dirty old Ram wedges for me!

Where did you get the deal? I'm going to heading out to Halpenny at Carrickmines tonight.

MY local pro shop had the flyers and it clearly stated that is a global deal. So it's not specific to any shop, it's a Cleveland deal. Said that Cleveland subsidise the €30.

Halpenny were talking alright about dropping the price from €129, but I see they are only gone to €99, wow

Give Krishna in Hollywood Lakes a ring, he has them advertised at €75 in various lofts, bounces and designs. (Remember there is the more CB one and the more traditional wedge style). He also has the €30 trade in deal and I'm sure he can get in more aswell.

He always matches high street prices, and I was feeling a bit silly when I thought I got a bargain, to see he had them for the same price :O
