Hello Folks, I am in currently replacing my old broken down boiler with an outdoor grant vortex condenser boiler. The old boiler was out in a pump house which I need to knock down. I got three plumbers around already with a view of getting a couple of more in. The main problem with my old central heating system is the house was all plumbed with 1/2" piping with no 3/4" piping in situe and the house never heated up properly. The plastic pipework is all inside trunking around the house so access is easier. The house is a 3 bedroom bungalow 1100 sq foot.

The plumber I had around will leave the bottom two bedrooms in 1/2" piping, then a 3/4" copper piping will be connected to that and run through one of the other bedrooms inside the trunking, but from there on he will chase the copper piping as I do not want more of the house taken up with trunking. Access to do this chasing is possible as the rooms that it will be going through has lino in the kitchen which will be easily lifted up and the sitting room in which I am changing the flooring anyway. I am also replacing the cylinder with a twin coil one as I will be installing a stove during the coming months.

I have some issues in relation to chasing pipes, I heard a kango hammer mentioned so afraid this will damage the house too much, I am having more radiators added than my current system so in total 10 radiators. There has been a big deviation in pricing amongst the plumbers I had calling, one was at €8000, other one at €4200, last one at around €3800 which was including materials and the boiler all the quotations were including radiators aswell, however the lower quote I am concerned as someone else he will have to get to commission the boiler so he must not be fully trained in installing them. The higher quotation was also going to commission the boiler and he was installing heating controls as he is also an electrician. €8000 seems steep to me but I need advice on the best way forward.

    Many thanks in advance

you would have too see a detailed quote of what the prices are for, there is no way anybody is supplying a grantvortex a twin coil cylinder and rads and fitting them for 3800

beacarefull on the cylinder position now for when you go to install the stove

Is he an electrician or a plumber? I'm a plumber and I can wire heating systems because i'm trained but I wouldn't call myself an electrician.

Get the quotes broken down and itemised so you know exactly what you're getting.
To be honest i would imagine it should be between 5000 and 8000 depending on material brands and so on and you should be going for the heating controls to make it efficient, you would also be eligible for an SEAI grant of €560 and at this stage you would be mad not to go for it.
