Intermittent Problem with Opel Astra

I have been having some trouble with my 2006 Opel Astra with the 1.6 litre engine. Every so often when I'm just driving along at any given speed the car suddenly jumps into kangaroo mode. The car starts jolting as if someone is pressing the accelerator and then rapidly lifting off. This continues for about 30 seconds. All this time my foot is pressing the accelerator. When I take my foot off the pedal it stops.

I have a feeling that this is related to the electronically controlled throttle housing and that its jamming or getting stuck for some reason. I've also heard that a clogged EGR valve can cause this. Anyone here ever experienced this?

You really need to get the car hooked up to diagnostic equipment so that any fault codes will point you to the possible cause of the problem.
