    Hi guys,

I would like to start this message by telling you that what in the story I am about to explain to you I KNOW i was extremely stupid. I am a very impulsive person and i cant help it! ( trying to change)

I was at an auction today and bought a bottle of wine for €140. I cannot afford it, subsequently freaked out and I just walked out of the auction. They have my telephone number and address. They were selling really expensive jewels, rugs and art aswel.
At the end of the day will they really chase me for 140?? Maybe i would be best to dodge them and if they ring say its a wrong number?? Or if I ring them and explain do you think there is any chance they will let me off??

    Please help!!!

Is this a serious question? You bid for an item at auction you cannot afford, won the item and now can't pay? Is that right??

Yes - the auctioneers WILL chase for payment!! They have your details for that reason. Your best bet is to CALL THEM and explain. Tell them you thought you had the money, now you haven't and cannot pay. Perhaps they might re-list the wine and just charge the fees for re-listing, but wouldn't bet on it. Don't dodge them. If the auctioneers can't find you on the phone, they'll almost certainly write to you.

As a matter of interest - why did you bid knowing you couldn't pay?

They probably WILL chase you for the money, so I'd advise following ABajaninCork's advice about that.

But, there's a huge difference between impulsivity and recklessness and what you did sounds very reckless. By 'working on it,' do you mean you are actively seeking treatment for whatever the cause of this impulsivity is?

It is a serious question unfortunately!! I just got caught up in the whole "buzz" of the auction and I thought the bottle was worth a lot more, so I thought I could sell it and make some money. Then as I was sitting there I googled it and it turns out I overpaid!!

It is a bit of a scam to be honest, the company say that things are worth farrr more than they are!! I live in a rented house where there is no record of me so I dont think they could really find me...am afraid if I ring them I will just bring attention to myself! They are a big auction company that have auctions every week so I was hoping maybe they would just relist...anyway. thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it.

You know you are impulsive yet you decided to show up to an auction where they sell expensive wine and other stuff.

You knew what you were up to.

You are just inconveniencing people !!

Sounds like you're just trying to justify what you did to yourself and to us.

Why ask for advice on whether or not they can chase you and whether or not you should pay it, if you're going to post straight after saying it's a scam and that you live in rented accommodation, so they won't be able to find you??

Do the right thing and either pay for it, or call them and explain your circumstances. And seriously, stay away from auctions if you cannot control your behaviour at them!

They'll likely re-list, but you'll be liable for the fees! Don't you realise that?? Your reaction is childish. Deal with the mess in an adult way, and seek counselling for your issues.

    !

Yes, fair enough point. I guess I am just trying to make you understand why I bought the bottle, and to understand where I was coming from. I thought I was making an investment and that I would be helping myself financially. As soon as I realized that was not the case I got scared and just walked out.... just wondered if anyone else had ever been in a similar situation I guess. Sorry, dont mean to waste anyones time. :(
    Thanks

You're not wasting our time, it just seemed as though you weren't actually taking the advice given to you on board.

Tbh, it's REALLY silly to go into an auction and just trust the prices that they place, rather than doing your own research first.

Ultimately, you owe them the money for it. You can't afford it, but they can chase you for it, so you should call them and ask about having it relisted because you made a mistake. Re-listing fees won't be huge, you should be able to afford that.

If you couldn't afford it, how could you have afforded it if it were something you were to sell on? Presumably you wouldn't have been able to sell it on immediately, it'd take time?

Ok, yes you are right. I am not going to dodge, I will call them in the morning and explain the situation. I dont have a lot of money at the moment so I thought I could buy the bottle then sell it online/ ebay or something straight away and make a quick turnover. It seemed like the perfect plan!

    Lesson most definitely learned.
