Strange beeping noise on Golf

Today I noticed an odd sound coming from my VW Golf (03, 1.4, Petrol). When I lightly accelerate, there is a continuous beeping noise. When I stop the car and remove the key, it beeps for a few seconds also.

The beeping is very quiet, hard to hear. No indicator light on the dash. Shes due in for a service on Friday and the timing belt is being replaced as its due.

    Any thoughts?

Ha something similar years ago on a 1.4 Golf, same beep as when the handbrake was left on. IIRC it was the the fuse for the brake warning system, maybe check your fuses.

Its a much lower beep, very hard to hear and its when driving low or when engine switched off.

I had that as well (05 Golf 1.6), except that sometimes it would also change tone and get quite loud. Had it in with mechanics a couple of times, including a VW main dealer and nobody could ever find anything. In fact they'd never heard of it happening at all, and typically in one case the sound stopped completely while I was driving to the garage to have it looked at. It hasn't happened any time recently, but I noticed that it tended to go away for a good while after I had the car serviced.

It seems to have only started today anyway, very very low pitched. Its only when you reach a low speed but I assumed the faster I got the louder the engine went so I couldn't hear it. Then as soon as the engine is dropped, you hear it again until she drains out.

Bloody odd! Just always nervous its something big, and will cost a fair whack to get it fixed. Timing belt due to be replaced but mechanic can't do it until Friday, so hesitant driving!
