E46 Diamond key reprogramming

    Little help needed here,

I've changed the battery in my spare key however I can't get it to reprogramme correctly. When I follow the procedure to sync the key it matches fine however it won't unlock the car. I've ruled out the unlock button as being faulty as it has to be pressed as part of the sequence to sync it.

Also, every time I do sync the key it seems to unsync my other key completely so that it won't open or close the car. When I match this key back it then knocks the other key out so it stops working completely.

I've changed two batteries in the spare key in order to sort it but to no avail.

    Any advice?

As part of the programming, If you turn the ignition with each key, it cancels out the previous one. You only turn it with 1 key initially.

You also have to programme all the keys at the same time. That's probably where you're going wrong.

As for the key not working.... I've no idea. Is it just the unlock button that won't work?

Just been doing them together but I've been putting both into the ignition at the same time which probably explains where I've been going wrong. Brb

Ok now I have both keys synced but the spare key still refuses to unlock the car.

Will it lock the car if you've unlocked it with the first key?

    Yes.

Neither key will lock or unlock if I try to do it manually in the door

    1. Go in and closed all the doors.

    2. Put the key in the ignition and switched momentarally to position 1 (left in this position not more than 5 seconds) then turned the key back to the off position.

    3. Removed the key.

    4. On the key transmitter, pressed and holded unlock button. Pressed and released lock button three times within 10 seconds while still having pressed the unlocked button.

    5. Released the unlocked button

    Do it with both keys

All working bar the unlock button on the spare key.

I know the button is working as it will sync hence I'm very confused by it

Yep but it always had the same problem I just thought the battery was failing. I've changed it in the other one successfully

Just as an FYI, I had oddities for a day or two after replacing my battery. It didn't settle down until I took it for a longish drive, so presume it needed a good charge.

I had planned to do that and in the rush to leave home I put the normal key in the ignition

Yeah, take it for a spin and let it charge.... would have thought the battery would have fixed that though!
