Issues with older NTL boxes

Hi all, looking for peoples opinions on this.

I have two NTL set top boxes set up in my house, one downstairs in the living room and one in my upstairs bedroom.

I have had my set-top box downstairs for about 10 years now. It's one of the older sliver ones (looks like a small VCR recorder), you load the viewing card in the back of it. Anyway, been having various problems with it- breaks in picture on some Music channels, RTE+1 does not appear on screen at all, some channels stick- Setanta and Dave in particular.

Regarding the second box in my bedroom, it's a few years old- a smaller Pace box (has the old purple display), this has begun playing up also. You can't mute it, the picture freezes totally for a couple of seconds, channels can jump (you put on RTE 1- 101, and it continually jumps..101, 101..)

I rang NTL a couple of weeks back and they said to me that they'd send somebody out to me if it continually happens.

Also, NTL gave me the impression that they wouldn't replace these two boxes.:(

I want both boxes replaced, do you think i should insist i get two replacement boxes??

    Thanks.

My upc box would not show some channels like RTE+1 and Fashion TV. Rang them up and they said that I had to upgrade my box for the newer model for which they charged me €45.

Guys this is the Terrestrial forum. You will get a better response in the Cable forum http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=54

    Moved to Cable

OP do you live in an area with On Demand? If so they will swap the boxes for UPC ones if you ask but you do have to pay the self install charge, the price of which escapes me right now.

Picture break up is usually weak signal to the box, meaning the cable between the box and the main cable running along all the houses may need to be replaced.

The box is the property of UPC. You are paying for a service. If it does not work complain and say they need to fix it for free. Don't agree to pay anything. The problem is with their gear so they should fix it.

Okay, i'll take that into consideration.

I think it's a combination of both set top boxes being older and a weak signal issue.

Regarding the large sliver set-top box downstairs, this cable runs into a sliver splitter which has three or four separate cables coming out of it. As i say this box is a least 10 years old- the cable is literally screwed into the back of it. Some of the Music channels freeze etc.

Regarding the pace box upstairs, as i say this box has the older purple display, you cannot mute the box. As i alluded to if i turn this box on tomorrow to RTE 1, it could continually jump....101, 101 etc. Also, this box has a tendency to change time- for instance if i turn this on at 5:46pm, the display has a tendency to go back a hour to read 4:46pm.

In a nutshell box boxes are old and unpredictable, need to be replaced and a upc tech guy needs to check out the cables/signal.

I'm contacting upc on Friday, surely they can replace both boxes for free. I would only require two of their standard boxes.

    Any thoughts?
