Which garmin for planning routes

    Hi.

I'm looking to buy a garmin, specifically so that I can map out a route before I head out and then it will guide me through my cycle.

I've recently moved to Sydney and I'm tired of ending up on really busy roads and areas that are just not ideal for cycling.

From looking at the garmin site a couple of the models can do this but they're the top end ones, one of the cheaper ones looks like it might do it but it's not very clear.

Anyone got a garmin that can do it? Which model is it?

    Thanks.

You can map a ride on Garmin Connect and then download it to the unit. This works eve on the 200. It won't show you a map, but it'll give you directions as you approach the turns.

No maps software is going to put you on quiet, good for cycling roads though, that needs a certain amount of local knowledge.

Ah ye I know, but I can at least map out a loop avoiding highways, cul de sacs and plan a route of a certain distance that finishes at my house. Getting tired of having to keep taking out my phone to see where I am.

Probably the best value bicycle-specific GPS at the moment is the Garmin Edge 800. It was recently replaced by the Edge 810, so in some places the 800 has been discounted. There may be limited availability however.

This place has them at a great price, but stocks are low. Be warned though, the maps for Ireland & UK are extra (you can buy them from the Garmin website), about €40 I think. Also you need a mini SD card, so if you don't own one, count that cost too.
