    Hi all

Thought I would chance a question on here,a neighbour has a circa 1968 ford 5000 diesel with a lot of oil in the water,it's done 5000 hours and never been apart,it had a lot of black sludge in radiator and two black streaks down the side of the block,on removing head it doesn't seem to be the gasket no obvious damage.
There is an oil feed to the rocker shaft above on of the streaks would they give problems here?
Also whilst head is off there is slight play in pistons nothing over the top would have to measure it but would this be normal,I would presume the rings take up a small bit of slack.the play I mean is from side to side in the bores.Neither of us are mechanics but can get through compently enough just looking for ideas of we're to check.head looks good no obvious warping although block needs to be checked also.
    Thanks in advance

Some of these engines especially later 66 ones were very prone to going porous in the blocks. Is the engine in yours a later replacement? Did the sump fill up with water?
Sometimes if the porous damage was between cylinders it can be possible to put liners in as a fix. But most ppl with one bit the bullet and put in a ribbed short block from 6610 onwards.

Not really sure about the amount of play in the pistons, when it is running and with the dipstick out it is normal for them to blow some oil out the dipstick hole.

Thanks blue5000 no it's the original engine and has never had work done before, the owner has had it since new,we have taken engine out and stripped completely it will be pressure tested to see if there are any leaks,no water in the sump just black sludge oil in rad,it's looking most likely like I head gasket failure as no other apparent damage is visible, although the pressure test will confirm,we have ordered one of the tisco rebuild kits and will have her back like new very soon.If we find any other problems I will post on here, the balancer in the sump was a surprise never seen one before, will this need to be timed on replacement?

What is the balancer in the sump, any chance of a pic? Would it have fallen out of the engine oil pump?

Balancer has timing dots on one side to time the balancer gears to each other and timing mark on the opposite side of one gear to time from the balancer to the crank.

If you have an eBay account I'd really recommend getting a manual if only for the right torque specs. Genuine factory manuals available on cd a good idea, just print the pages you need and not worry about getting them dirty.

I&T manuals are good, lack a little detail but cover the basics. These are sometimes available at local vintage shows
