    Hi,
I want to get my husband a tablet/ipad/netbook but I haven't a clue about any of these.
Sorry if this has been done to death - I did a quick search.
I want it for basic internet usage, to be able to use Microsoft word or similar (so he can do work on the move), transfer from product to pc and maybe even add a keyboard through usb *-*
I just don't know where to begin between android jellybean etc.
Can you recommend a product that does the above or any tips to look out for :-)
Thanks from a tech dumb woman ;-)

Does he have an iPhone or an Android phone already? I'd recommend getting something similar to what he's already used to, if possible. I've used Android phones for a few years and recently won an iPad, which I find a pain in the face to use (being used to Android).

If its for actually doing stuff on then a small laptop would be better than a tablet.

Tablets are great for browsing, reading, movies and games. Typing and work, is best done on a laptop.

Fyi, an iPad is a tablet. Just like a hoover is a vacuum cleaner.

Moved from Comp & Tech. :)

Moved a bit quickly there in my opinion. The OP isn't quite sure what she wants. I would have left it in Comp and Tech for better more varied advice.

My father always said "Never ask a barber whether you need a haircut", if you go into a shop and ask them they will sell you something, which won't necessarily match your requirements.

Advice on boards is free. And lets face it, most of us, have little else to do.

I know you are trying to be a good girlfriend and make it a surprise, but to be honest, I would recommend, instead, telling him you would like to buy him something and ask him for his input. He will still appreciate the effort, and together you will get the right thing.

You could consider something like the HP Envy X2. http://www.cnet.com/laptops/hp-envy-x2/4505-3121_7-35540592.html

It is a hybrid type machine. In laptop mode it operates like a touch screen netbook and then the screen can be removed and used as a tablet. There are a few things to be aware of with this machine.

First of all it runs windows 8, so it is far behind both the android play store and apple app store in terms of what apps are available, but it does have office 2013.

It runs on an atom processor which is not a top end processor by any means. This will still manage all the functionality your husband will probably need, it will quite happily run office, surf the net, stream video but it wont play anywhere near the newer PC games or deal with things like multimedia editing. It wont compare to other ultrabooks but holds its own against the current range of tablets.

The upside to the atom processor is that it will have amazing battery life (10 hours and up with the keyboard dock attached) which would be useful for college.

When docked it has USB connectors, HDMI port and a full size SD card slot.

It comes with 64gig but around 20 of this will be used up for system requirements.

There are other hybrids available that run windows like the Samsung Ativ Smart PC or the Asus Vivo Tab Rt. Then there are the Asus range of android transformers. All of which have there good points and bad. I would suggest searching for some video reviews of these and seeing which match your needs and wallet.

Was either here or laptops, but thought the op seemed keener on the tablet devices so moved it here :)

thanks invaderjim - looks fantastic - unfortunately my budget doesn't stretch that far - its a last minute idea that popped into my head -probably should have mentioned under the 400e mark - so prob won't get much for that!!
skylops thanks but this HAS to be a surprise...though i do like your dads saying ...and any help appreciated :)
So I actually got my finger out today and researched the options, now I am thinking that a small laptop would be better for all concerned as this old pc is going for the last 7 years :) (and windows 2003!!!)

I came across these are any of these any good for the usual surfing - downloading a few movies (legal of course :) ) - office stuff - wifi

We bought my dad an acer netbook for christmas and he loves it. It was 250 I think in Argos. Make sure you get an external mouse also. Netbook mouse pads tend to be poor.
The chromebook might be the one to go for.
