Mondeo MK4 - 1.8 TDCi (125bhp) vs 2.0 TDCi (115bhp)

    I'm in the market for a 07-09 Mondeo (MK4) and couldn't decide between the 1.8 TDCi (125bhp) or the 2.0 TDCi (140bhp).

After a spot of research this is what I gathered:
    1. Reliability: The 1.8 is the older but more reliable engine. Plus it does not have the troublesome DPF that is in the 2.0 TDCi.
    2. Performance: The 2.0 comes out tops here - more powerful, quicker take off. The 1.8 is not enough for the large MK4 model.
    3. Economy: Both engines list similar fuel economy - 48mpg. But it seems that the actual fuel consumption is better in the 1.8 (45-50mpg), compared to the 2.0 (40-45mpg).
    4. Popularity: The 2.0 is much more popular, making it easier to sell on in the future if I need to.

Recently I took both models for a (very brief) test drive. I took the 1.8 first and it seemed perfectly adequate, I couldn't see why all the negative reviews. Then I drove the 2.0 and understood why it was the popular choice. No comparison really. It's not just a lot quicker, it has a much smoother acceleration.

But my main factors for deciding are economy and reliability - so I was still leaning towards the 1.8 TDCi (better real mpg and no DPF to worry about)
Then I got thinking about the 2.0 (115bhp) model. There are not so many around as the (140bhp) version, but a few for sale. Fuel economy is improved by approx 5 mpg so it should be on a par with the 1.8 (125bhp) in real terms.

I'm wondering if anyone has driven both the 2.0 (115bhp) and the 1.8 (125bhp) and can give me some feedback on how they compare? It seems the 115bhp takes a full second longer to get from 0-60 mph.

I was also thinking about the 1.8 ECOnetic (125bhp - 5 gear) model:that should get better fuel economy again and it doesn't seem to compromise in speed/power compared with the 6 gear 1.8 (125bhp).

    Any advice / tips appreciated.

I have a 1.8 125bhp one. Terrible turbo lag, 200k (120miles) and I need a new DMF. I sell car part aftermarket and we sell bugger all for the 2.0.

If I was changing tomorrow I would get the 2.0.

The reason you sell feck all for the 2.0 is that there are very few of them around compared to the 1.8.

Well that's the Irish for you, keep the engine size and the tax small....

Just noticed the thread title little error there.

I'd have the 2.0 one, the 1.8 one is underpowered, always was.

Exactly. I'd say it is 10:1 in Ireland going from our experience of them.

In fairness anything we have sold has been in the North west direction of the country.

Isnt the 2.0 TDCI with 115bhp availble only from 2011?

Great timimg for this thread as I am looking at changing to a 08/09 mondeo estate. All info I have is pointing to the 2.0. Timing belt changes on the 1.8 are more expensive also. Great forum called talk ford with loads of info on it of you really want to dig into stuff.

My plan is to buy it and drive it into the ground but on the off chance I don't like it (always drove german) I want to be able to move it on hence the newer tax system. This has me confused as I've seen 1.8s being €570 and 2.0 ranging from that to €280. Emissions seemed to be radically different in 08 on various cars with the same engine. I'm looking at UK for Titanium spec and checking regs on cartell for vrt purposes.

Has anyone a definitive guide? Parkers is not specific enough and would you be safe on cartells info?

Only for a short time until the 1.6 TDCi arrived.

Maybe in Ireland but I'm buying in Europe and it is available pre 2011 here - unless the various adverts are lying?

But I was asking about the 2.0 115bhp - not the 140bhp version.

I have the 2.0 115bhp -2011 @ 199bhp .. the 115bhp engine is the same as the 140bhp and 163bhp, also it has 126bhp org. when tested not 115bhp, that what the bsr team says.. .... as you can see with bsr.se you can tune this engine to 199bhp as i have.
    Original BSR Tuning
    Effekt 126hp 199hp
    Torque 313nm 386nm

    Intervall vxl Original BSR %
    80-120km/h 3 8.5s 5.2s 38%
    80-140km/h 4 18.5s 11.7s 37%
    100-150km/h 4 18.4s 10.6s 42%
