Totally confused about what car to buy!!

Im trading in my petrol corolla and looking to move onto a diesel car.

I have a budget of around 10000 with my corolla and I am hoping to get a 2010/2011 car in return. I want a change away from an corolla/auris though!

First and foremost I need an economical car as I do a lot of travelling on country roads, up and down hills etc. It would need to be reliable and a young persons car as im in my 20s.

Size wise I dont really care, im toying with the idea of getting a saloon but I would def need parking sensors as I am shocking at parking and judging distance! I wouldnt say no to another car similar size as auris.

I love my gadgets so Im looking for a car with good spec.... (would love sat nav, but not a must)

I have looked at Kia ceed, great value car but nothing special to look at
I love the look of some of the newer Hyundai i30s and Seat Leons.... vw Golf looks a bit boring but would suffice.
I would love a nice BMW 3 series.... but finding it impossible to get low milage 2010 one in my budget.
Not sure about Audi a4 as I havent really researched enough.

Trying to avoid Renault and Ford models!

I would love some advice as I just havent a clue

How about a 1 series coupe? You have time enough to be getting saloons in your thirties when you have to. The above one kicks the sh*t out of any Kia ceed or Hyundai.

    Until the timing chain snaps.

Indeed. Other cars have plenty of potentially very costly issues also but at least the 120d is far nicer to drive than any of them. OK it might snap, they sky might fall, but at least the OP in his 20's can say that he drives something a bit different. Or he could play it safe and get a Mazda/Kia/Hyundai.

    What about a seat exeo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

    Avensis/Accord Diesel or a Cee'd/Octavia diesel imo

    Nice safe first diesel cars

If there is no resale value then surely you can get one very cheap.

Not much cheaper than everything else in its class?
    Disproves that theory so.

What do you think of the exeo?

That civic bazz posted looks class.

But seems very expensive. You can get one like that from UK for much less.

The civic looks nice but im worried about fuel economy with 2.2 engine.

I got one like that 3 months ago.
So far average fuel consumption is 5.8 L/100km.
In old money it reflects to nearly 49MPG.

    And I don't drive slowly.

    OP trading something in though.

Spec is nice on it, main thing is finding a car model you like then going about finding the particular car - I think anyway.

A small engine doesn't mean it will automatically be more economical than a larger engine. In a car the weight of a Civic the 2.2 litre engine will need little effort to get around meaning it will be frugal compared to a small engine which is underpowered and struggles as it has to use more fuel just to get about.

A good example is the old Pug 205 diesel, about as frugal as you could find.

Ok well need an economical diesel car prob mid sized or small saloon.
I want something that looks nice and im planning on keeping if for a few years so need something practical as family may get larger.
If you are thinking about a family, you may want to think about an estate.
I know they aren't everyones cup of tea but for carrying buggies and the like they can't be beat.
Saloons or small hatches won't have much if any room for a buggy and all the gear that you will find you need.

Definitely no estate. I struggle to park my hatchback corolla at times!!!!
Want domething that looks nice also
Estates can often look better then hatches and saloons of the same model.

What about something like this OP?

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Accord/2.2I-DTE/201316214522328/advert?channel=CARS

    no-image-large.gif&width=400&height=300

Parking sensor front and rear, and a reversing camera.

I get the impression that if the OP is struggling to park a hatchback Corolla then an Accord is going to be too big and awkward for him even with parking sensors and reversing camera.

OP, I think people here have given pretty much all there to recommend in the lines of what you are looking for so I'm struggling to see what else you will find pleasing.

In fairness my wife used to drive small cars and said she could never park a saloon etc...but what we have found is that yes for the first initial drives it took a while but now she wouldnt drive smaller cars, loves the solidness on the the road. The accord is a great car and the 2.2ctdi is a very frugal diesel also very quiet.

apologies the op said about 10k, the accord is out, but the civic 2.2 may be in!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I'm not denying the Accord is a good car but judging by the OP's posts it will most probably not suit him size wise, irrespective of what parking aids it has.

Both myself and himself will be driving car.
I will prob get 6500 trade in on my car nd have another 10k wihh that.
I must say that im not overly liking the shape of the civic but I would need to see it in reality.
    Thanks

    The Accord is in budget.

You can also get the civic in saloon, this is a 1.8 petrol v nice drive and same if not better economy than the 1.4 civic depending on driving. In fairness though that accord is the business, I have the 2.2 ctdi in a crv and its a brill engine

Another vote for the 2.2 Civic. Average about 55mpg with it and it looks the business.

I've that generation civic too and its such a good all rounder, the interior seems a bit bonkers but its all really logical and everything falls to hand. Its very big inside and the boot is enormous when you drop the false floor.

I was in my jag today and it was such a disappointment (apart from the engine note)

Theres no way id trade it in for a golf, focus, astra,Leon etc

Why are you trying to avoid Renault and Ford OP?
