Ok, the second most raised thread in motors...

The DMF on my car is gone. 2008 1.8tdci Mondeo 200k klms. I have to say I was suprised how quickly it broke down. Heard a noise on Tuesday evening, thought a pulley was on the way, nothing Wednesday and then Thursday rattle rattle bang bang and I could feel a vibrating in the clutch pedal. Dropped it in Friday morning and it was confirmed.

Noise would have sounded like exhaust rattling, when I accelerated at speed there was a noise that made me think turbo. When car was idle with clutch depressed noise was gone, but with clutch engaged noise was very loud.

TBH I am probably lucky in one way, company I work for import the parts and the mechanic is a friend. So I gotten the parts cheaper than most here, OE parts as well and the mechanic doesn't rip me off, in fact he has done large work, timing belt etc and not charged. But this is a big job and getting a price from him is like getting blood from a stone. Anyone know the normal labour charge for a 6 speed Mondeo full change? or how long it takes?

Just on the driving front, I would drive 80 miles a day, 95% motorway at 80kph+. Car had 80k klms on it when I got it, mechanic check everything and reckons that failure was due to wear and tear, guessing the car was a rep's car first and the stop start driving caused the damage. and to be fair he didn't know who owned the car before me and it was a Rep.

I was told that it is possible the gearbox might be damaged, due to the flywheel breaking down and parts going into the gearbox.

Unless any of the broken parts of the DMF have punched holes in the gearbox casing then its not possible for them to have made it into the gearbox as the box is completely sealed from the bellhousing.

how can one test a dmf to see if its ok? is there a trick like checking for play on a turbo?

parts should be 5-600e for flywheel / clutch + bearing

gearboxes can be damaged from badly worn flywheels yes
