    an oxymoran ea!

Doing a fantasy team for the championship. Who is the best defender who will also score a few points consistently?

I know the likes of karl lacy is a good option but any other ideas?

Are Kildare leaving Bolton in the forwards for the championship?

Monaghan's Darren Hughes regularly gets forward from the half-back line for the odd point and even chips in with a goal now and again aswell.

Ciaran Lenehan has been a regular scorer for us during the league. He's kicked some great points and many Meath fans are calling for him to be tried at half forward.

Aaron Kernan would be the best imo.

    What he said.

However if his team is eliminated he won't score anything.

Tomás...and its not even close...going into his 16th c/ship season and still going strong AND scoring points on a regular basis. Its been a pleasure to watch him over the years..he'll be a massive loss when he retires.

Johnny Davey used to be brilliant for Sligo, unfortunately he hasn't been the same since he picked up a serious injury against Down in 2010.

I would echo this. His scoring average is 1-2 points a game.Kevin Nolan is also a good punt if an attacking wing back is what you are looking for.

Keegan is normally good for couple points

James McCarthy gets a fair share of scores come championship time

Will Niall Calahane be a starter? He could be a good option?

Aaron Kernan will likely take frees so will score a ton of points. I think one of the fantasy sites has Sean Armstrong named as a back, so he's a no-brainer if using that one. Why would Karl lacy be a good option?

Because he is an attack minded back who consistently scores a few points.

I think he may have lost a yard of pace in recent years!

Canty would not be a regular scorer for Cork,he is also injury prone, and he is playing in a new role as a holding midfielder. He won't attack as much,Aidan Walsh will be allowed to attack.Canty if selected will hold the middle.
Canty at 33 years of age has not the legs to play like he used to.
He plays more to a system now rather than before when he could play more counter attacking.
I'm not sure if James Loughrey the ex Antrim player is on the list but he could be a real star this summer.
The word in Cork is he will start Saturday against Limerick. He played against Laois in a challenge match friday night.
He was highly rated in Antrim and Ulster. He does not seem to be blighted by injuries either.Has played a Club game in Cork but got 1-3 from midfield.
Considering he has already proved it at the top level with Antrim,he could be the best attack minded back from Cork. And no dissrespect to Antrim but he will have better players around him. He's game is meant to be built on attack, and he got a goal that was amongst a list nominated as being the best in the championship a few years ago. It's on you tube.
He would be a safer bet than Canty.

lol-as a donegal man was delighted to see canty, kissane and oleary on the ball last august.knew they werent going to score much with the lads snaking over and back accross the pitch.

    Kevin Cassidy for me

I'd say if i was looking for an important goal and he was playing in the backs then Bolton would be my first choice, and I'm not a Kildare supporter.

that should be a condition of this thread, that you can't name a player from your own county. :)

Adrian Flynn of Wexford is a scoring machine !

Was looking through the post with only one name in me mind, and then saw someone else thinking exactly the same... James Loughrea could be a real gem for a fantasy team, prob cheap cause relatively unknown but has plenty experience from playing with antrim and after only 5 months in the rebel county looks a likely starter.

I would have been all over Gareth Bradshaw......but for the last day. Short season coming up, so you'd require a transfer.

Keith Higgins when he cuts loose is a joy to behold.
His direct running with pace generally cause havoc drawing half backs out of position of the opposing team and freeing up space for his own teams forwards.

Probably doesn't get the admiration that he deserves outside of Mayo however due to the fact he hasn't won an All-Ireland but he would walk onto any team in the country.

And a dual player to boot :)

The Galway full back the last day against Mayo was very attack minded. Tearing off up the field while the second goal was being scored.

Paul Cribbin regularly scores for Kildare from wing back.

James Loughrey was the immediate one to spring to mind, can't wait to see him playing for Cork, although he probably was in a better half back line in Antrim.

Yeah i agree,I posted him as my choice last week.
Watching him Sat night hes first instinct is to attack. He will be a definite starter for Cork barring injury for the rest of the championship. He was excellent in only hes first start for Cork in the championship.Against Clare he should really come to in to he's own.
The post match talk from the players is he is a huge part of their plans for the season. The guy has natural pace to burn.He will only get better for Cork.
Joe Brolly said a while back he would be huge for Cork, and like him or not Brolly is seldom wrong.
Time will prove how good he is but he could be our answer to the replacement for John Miskella. We havent had a half back as good since he retired. We may have found the answer.

    thomas o'shea is the best.

I know he's yet to play a Championship match, but Jack McCaffrey for Dublin definitely fits the bill. During the league, he regularly tore through defences. He has pace to burn, in fact he's probably the fastest player with ball in hand/soloing on the Dublin team. As long as doesn't get injured, I believe he'll contribute to Dublins scores regularly this summer.
