A bit of background info first.

I noticed that the engine on my car hasn't been idling all that well and cutting out when cold. I thought it was down to the fact that the car has not been used that much in the last few months plus the weather has been cold and damp.

I gave it a good long run on the motorway, not over revving, building up the temp nice and easy and then a good long run.

However it doesnt seem to have improved all that much.

My NCT test was due so rather than spending a small fortune on going to a mechanic and see what he says then doing the test, I sent it into the centre and it came back with failed emissions which tbh I expected.

The guy at the centre reckons the catalytic converter could be gone on it.

    I'm driving a 2001 Audi A6 1.8T Saloon.

Anyone have an idea what to expect cost wise or any other suggestions on what it could be? Need to know if it's worth my while to fix or just cut my losses.

    Thanks.

    What were the test results?

A non failed cat would not cause any running issues generally. A blocked one maybe but in either case, a failed cat is a symptom of another problem.

    Cheers for the feedback ND

    Low idle - 0.50% above
    High idle - 0.30% above

But I do agree that it sounds like something else is causing it.

How would I go about clearing out a blocked cat?

I'm thinking that maybe something like a failing coil pack has caused it.
    Any ideas?
