Job Application forms

    Hi all

I am applying for a job and have downloaded the application form from the website (Word Document)

Just wondering for I type in the different details (Personal data etc.) or write it out manually.

If I type it, the boxes change and the applicationgoes onto 3 pages. If I print it out, the application is 2 pages but the boxes for information are small to fit all the information in.

    Which way would Principals prefer?

I know the prefer having only 2 pages but not if they can't read it as it cluttered?

    Thanks.

I think I know which school you are applying to :) I'm typing all and hoping if the boxes expand they won't mind :)

Haha, hopefully not the same job! :P I decided to write it out and photocopy it.

Probably won't get a reply but give it a go anyways

On the forms that we give to applicants it states that they must be typed. Failure to do so means elimination from the selection process. I feel that that handwriting a form is unacceptable in 2013. Would you handwrite a CV? My advice is to take time and get it right. If you have difficulties with formatting etc get help! Ruth the large number of applicants for every position shirt listing will eliminate forms that are poorly prepared immediately. Good luck on applying.

That's true about it being typed, I agree it looks better. It is my preferred option.

I think that it would be cheeky to extend the application form. Someone has spend the time to make this form. Then an applicant has decided to make the boxes bigger and extend it onto an addition page.

But saying all that, I have decided to type it. :)

Principals accept the need to extend boxes (unless stated that the application should be not longer than ....pages, as in the case often for P & DP forms). Just get someone else to read over it before sending. It is amazing how many application forms I receive that have glaring errors!

While id agree with you on the typing out, idea also like to put the ball back in your court...

I feel that in 2013 school secretaries/principals should be able to create a form that the formatting doesn't change as you type..this can be done through pdf..or else get yourselves up to date and accept online submissions through drop down menus etc (similar to surveymonkey etc).

If your having difficulties there are courses and online tutorials..sorry to be snotty but its a two way street if your going to insist upon others getting up to date!

As a format pdf is great, however many applicants don't have access to PDF writer. Hence forms in word format are provided.

There's a PDF to word converter free on the Internet. I used it for something last year.

No insistence, they will simply not be shortlisted.

Job applicants definitely need to follow any instructions given, so if it says it must be typed then that's what you do.

The problem is with forms, as in the OP, which don't specify either way and which aren't formatted correctly for typing. It's not just ones where the boxes expand and jump pages, there's also the ones where tables jump and overlap each other or merge with other tables.

Some of the shoddy application forms are a disgrace and schools should be embarrassed to put them out there. No excuses. It's pathetic in this day and age.

    Thanks all for the replies.

I popped it into the post on Saturday with the 3 copies as requested.

I formatted the form to fit onto two pages and I was allowed a separate page for interests etc. This I thought was good.

I hope I get an interview and better still the job. So far, I have done subbing in my old school and I did my teaching practice there. Even though, I like the school and staff. I would like a fresh start. :)

Well I suppose principals can afford to be flippant as it's a buyers market. They can throw out badly formatted application forms and expect you to tidy it up for them.

I've filled out two online pdf forms before using pdf reader (maybe I have some wierd version!), and advised someone who couldn't work it to use foxit (that took me ten seconds to find on a google search, amongst many other online softwares). It just takes a further 20 seconds to verify if the software has gotten good reviews!

In previous employment incarnations I have filled out 2 online application forms (drop down menus, text boxes etc.).
