You haven't mentioned a budget. 10 days will cost a large chunk of change. We enjoyed five nights at Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort And Spa, but it didn't come cheap.

Hi all, i hope you can help.

A friend and i are looking to go to Dubai in September and I was wondering if anybody had any experience of where to stay. We are hoping too stay as close to everywhere as possible as we won't be hiring a car. We plan to see a lot of the place and do trips into the desert for dune buggying , sand boarding etc.... We will however hire a car for a few days and head to Ferrari world on Yas island and head towards Abu Dhabi

We will be staying for 10 days overall. A nice hotel / apartment recommendation would be great, somewhere not too expensive , say €120 max per night between us. I know this is low season, but I just can't work out where to be in the city to minimise taxi travel, but to also be as close to everywhere as possible

    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

    Hi,

you can't stay close to everything .. dubai is one long motorway and there are things to see on both sides. We were there few weeks ago in April and stayed in Internet/Media city, which is just opposite the palm. It was close to atlantis waterpark and dubai marina. Also mall of the emirates is just there. But if you wish to visit gold souk or old part of Dubai - that is on the other side. Taxis are extremely cheap (we were told 2 liters of petrol cost 1 dollar)..

We took train (or metro or whatever it is) and although it seems comfortable and fast, it wasn't at all, with so many stops .. so we decided to take taxi all the time.

Dubai Mall with burj kalifa is in the middle, but I wouldn't recommend to stay there as there isn't much else to see, and it's expensive.

I think with budget 120 a night you can get pretty decent hotel in nice area.

Btw we found abu dhabi to be much more interesting than dubai :) (dubai is one huge shopping center)

We also bought dubai entertainer (1500 buy one get one free coupons) with some for abu dhabi (like ferrari world) .. and lots of restaurants, ski dubai etc etc, it costs around 70 euro (online, free shipping) we saved maybe 200-300 euro on it, and than sold remaining coupons on ebay for 60e :)

Thanks for the information. I was actually there last year for a 10 hour stopover so seen a small bit. Was down by the Atlantis, that's about as far as I got, then headed back to Abu Dhabi for my flight home. So would you recommend staying more down town let's say? Is it bur or Deira or something?

    Thanks

Don't worry about the car travel so find the hotel that suits you the most in terms of attractions and things. I have family there and I have to say the taxis are cheap and plentiful.

We got a taxi to Abu Dhabi and it was silly cheap. :pac:

The coupon book is great too!

We stayed in area new dubai, on the other side from the airport, as you come in from abu dhabi (near atlantis) and it was nice, we went skiing in ski dubai and than for few (wish i could say drinks, but not in dubai) non alcoholic cocktails to dubai marina, and it's really nice there, 5 mins in taxi to hotel.

However I think there are some museums on the other side in Al Ras area, however we expected historical (old town) part of dubai to be amazing.
When we went to old town it was dodgy, dirty and not what we expected at all (although by guide it is one of top 10 to see in Dubai). But maybe we went too early (4pm), maybe it is more interesting in the evening..

On the map everything looks like short distance, but for example it takes around 20 minutes just to get from Dubai Mall to metro (on escalators!!!) .. I couldn't believe it might take so long.

Thinking now, it might be a good idea to stay somewhere around burj kalifa and dubai mall (in the middle of dubai), not much to do there, but at least it is close to both sides of dubai.

As others said don't worry about the taxi fares. The taxis are dirt cheap and readily available at all times.

Thank you for all your posts, it's a little clearer now. Think we will do a few days in Abu Dhabi now too. Booklet looks good, thanks for the heads up

Do the red bus tour, sit up top and you will get a tan in an hour its like being in a fan oven ! Tour is very good and you get to go on boat as well across the harbour, dubai marina is amazing at night

The new waterpark in Abu Dhabi http://www.yaswaterworld.com/en - looks better in terms of rides than Acquaventure which I've been to.

don't forget to go down to the atlantis. can walk around small parts of it for free. and when there go into the ice cream café I think its called the creamery. also I time allows go dun bashing.
Also if you know of anyone over there or that will be going might be no harm to enquiry about getting the entertainer. it will save you a nice bit

I saw so many russian tourists there and their dress code - Tiger pants, tiger shirt .. seems like a trend in Russia .. showing more than one would want to see ...

I haven't noticed that women would dress differently than in Ireland - I think they care more about the money you bring into the country rather than your dress. Most people I met in Dubai were foreigners, I've seen locals only in shopping malls. I believe it is recommended to cover when you go to a place where many local people are, but if you go to tourist places it doesn't matter.

One more tip for whoever goes there,

we really had trouble with money

single bank note equivalent to I think 20euro was really hard to use for smaller purchases. If you try to pay for bottle of water with such note they for some reason get mad. Same for taxi - so annoyed if you don't have smaller change .. something like paying 10euro in a shop with 500euro note here in Ireland. Seemed ridiculous to me (it still money) but maybe they are used to small change.

We were refused at few places as a result ..
