I might be able to help, but I'm not sure I fully understand you post.

Are you currently working for tesco?
    Do tesco not pay weekly?
How do you know how long your contract is for if they haven't given you one?
Why don't you just open a bank account if this is how they normally pay?

For me and some fellas tesco pays fortnightly
The manager told me that im based on short term but full time work
I opened in tuesday and they said I have to wait for pin and so on,

However now I didnt payed rent for 2 months, becuase I stayed without salary, and he said that HE MIGHT give me a cheque but I cannot lodge him without a bank acount its strange because do I cant just take a cheque go to bank and take my money.?

Open a bank account. You wont be able to do anything with the cheque unless you have a bank account. No bank will hand you out the cash & the cheque will probably have to be lodged a few days for it to clear in order to draw out the cash.

Even if they give you a check you will have I wait a few days before it clears so your pin will prob arrive before then

Could you cash the check in tescos?
They have to pay you and I can't see any reason why they couldn't give you a cheque

They used to pay in cash a few years ago. I'm sure they could give you cash

Yes, your wife can lodge the cheque into her bank account, you must sign the back of the cheque to endorse it. It will take about five working days to clear the cheque.

The chances of a large chain giving a cheque isn't good. I'd get a bank account sorted or ask if the can pay directly into your wife's account.

once your bank account is open, it is open. You have to wait for your pin etc to withdraw money, but your account will still be active for your salary to be paid into.

No where will cash third party cheques now adays - it is due to money laundering legislation and also the fact that so many cheques bounce. No where will pay in cash either, and why should they? They have a set payroll process and issuing cash/cheques for individual employees is unreasonable to expect. Each store has possibly over 100 employees to issue payment to.

OP, why did you not open a bank account as soon as you started work? Or even give your wife's bank account details until your own is set up. The money can then be paid directly to her bank account and she can give you the money. When your own bank account is set up, just tell your payroll department what the new account number and sort code is and they will change it.

It is hardly their fault that you did not set up a bank account! you are there over 2 months, so it's not like you haven't had time to do it. It takes 30 mins to call into the bank and set up the account and within a 24-36 hours (depending on the bank) your account will be active. In some banks it will be active immediately.

No, you won't be able to lodge the cheque in your wife's account. The quickest solution is to give tesco your account details.

    Why?

A lot of banks won't allow you to lodge a cheque made out to a different person, even if it is endorsed on the back.

Which banks? There are only a handful of banks, I've been with more than one of them and never had a problem with that.

I know neither PTSB or AIB will do it. My husband tried to lodge a revenue cheque made out to me to our joint account, but accidentally brought the account details for his own account. Although the cheque was endorsed on the back, AIB would not allow it to be lodged to either the joint account or my husbands account by a third party. I had to lodge it myself. I also tried to lodge a cheque for my sister to my account with PTSB - she had endorsed it. They would not lodge it. They said they would need more than her signature on the back and wanted a letter from her giving permission to lodge the cheque into my account and a copy of her driving licence or passport.

Personally I think it is only right too - how easy is it to scrawl a signature on the back of a cheque? If it is made out to a named person, only that person should be able to lodge it. AFAIK if the named person wants to lodge it to a third party's bank account that is different, as itis their cheque to lodge where they like. So OP could go in with the cheque himself and lodge it to his wife's account, but she most likely will not be allowed to lodge a cheque made out to him.

just a once off while he was stuck wouldnt have killed em!! My place did it for me for a few weeks around the time of the Ulster bank fiasco.

No bank will accept a third party cheque. It's a fairly recent thing, but banks are very very strict on it.

The ulster bank situation is different. Firstly you wouldn't have been the only employee they did it for. Secondly it was not a situation of your own making. OP appears to have been working for a number of weeks. There is no justifiable reason why he couldn't have set up a bank account in that time. In the meantime there was no reason why he couldn't have made an alternative arrangement and had it paid into his wife's account. It is fairly standard practice for the majority of businesses to pay by electronic transfer into a bank account.

I work in a Financial Institution and this can be done, perhaps different banks have different procedures.

I've also done this a number of time (including lodging a foreign currency cheque made out to one of the kids into my own account).

I wonder can the OP get a short term loan off a friend on the strength of the cheque while it is clearing?
