2003 Toyota Corolla

    Hi folks

My 2003 Corolla 1.4 vvti is due a service. There's 85k on it at this stage, & to my knowledge the coolant has never been changed. So along with changing that, should I go ahead & have the water pump done while I'm at it...basically I'm wondering if there's a rough age/mileage that water pumps in this model start to act up?

I think the water pump on corollas last well over 100K miles. If it is not leaking or is noisy I'd leave it alone at least until 100k.

No leaks, no apparent bearing noise either...so maybe do it at 100k? Cheers :)

Unless you're in there for something else I don't see a reason to change it at all, afaik the pump will start leaking slowly once it's on its way out.
Your model has a timing chain yeah?

Google your exact model and "service intervals" and you should get some info on what needs replacing when.

Even more. Mine has roughly 200k miles and still going well.

I wouldn't bother as long as it doesn't leak.

If you REALLY want to, change coolant. But IMO better (at this stage) is to change brake fluid. :)

Jeez 200k? I'll just pop my eye over it every once in a while then & watch for seeping? The drive/aux belt really needs changing though, along with coolant so I figured I'd ask about the pump while I was at it.

Brake fluid is actually on my list too, more than likely never been done before so after a decade, its prob time enough!

Is there anything else that usually needs attention on these at my mileage? Mine is timing chain based, so how are the chain tensioners etc?

The chain will start to make noise if it's in bad shape.

I'd just replace brake and coolant fluids. How's the oil and filters?

Oil & filter was done last Summer, so will be done hopefully in the next two weeks.
Air filter hasn't been done in about three years
    Spark plugs the same
Pollen filter was removed by the last owner, I actually completely forgot about this until I noticed the car started fogging up really badly during the last downpour!

New tyres all round there in Jan, NCT passed in Feb, so basically looking to give it a good all round once over

In my opinion air filter is quite important, for mpgs but also general engine health.
It's cheap and should (again imo) be changed every year. When changing have a look in the box, sometimes there's leaves and all kinds of ****e in there :)

Cheers Biko, will likely get it done with the oil/filter & plugs, then get the brakes bled & fluid change shortly after.

Do the plugs for it have to be specifically gapped, or can I just replace them directly?

Check the plugs, if the gap gets too big they can start to blow coils.
They are pretty good engines if serviced on time.
NGK come pre-gapped but its always good practice to check them.

For the vehicle general health we have to service the vehicle on time if we delay then definitely car will create problems. Whenever you are changing the engine oil also change the oil filter, air filter, radiator condition, battery condition. This care will increase the life of your vehicle.

Em, thanks. I was more wondering about specific things for this year Corolla, with this particular mileage {85k}. I'm less worried about the water pump now, & will get the brake fluid changed as mentioned above :)

Most (if not all) of them are pregapped, so straightforward job actually.

    Your engine (4ZZ-FE) needs:

    - Denso K16R-U11 (factory OEM),
    - or NGK BKR5EYA-11.
