My son had a DS 2 years ago and lost. He is coming up to 7 years old now and wants a new DS. What would you recommend? Should I get the DSi and can he play his old games on that? He has about 20 old games. I've heard the 3DS is bad for kids eyesight, so dont want to get that. Or should I go for something else altogether - that would be better value? We have Wii at home and he also wants Skylanders. I'm not really that up on games / gaming so all suggestions welcome.

I would go for a 3DS. It can play any of his old games that he has, and many of the new games coming out that he may want may only be released on 3DS, so it's best to spend the money on the newer console. Shop around for deals or some second hand ones depending on your budget anyway!

The 3D is said to only be harmful to children 6 and under. But if you are concerned you can set up parental settings on the console so that he isn't able to use the 3D feature. The games will still work fine, just won't be a 3D display. Any old games he has won't play in 3D anyway, just any newer 3DS games you purchase.

The bit I bolded there is key. Nintendo are just covering themselves in case there's future evidence that the 3D is harmful, there's nothing to suggest that it is harmful at any age. Some people apparently get headaches from the 3D but then some people get headaches from trying to read. :pac: There's literally nothing to suggest that the 3D will do anything to a kid's eyesight but it can be permanently turned off if you want.
