Dont know from beyond Malahide, but once you get to the Malahide road it's plain sailing. Easy cycle from Malahide/Portmarnock. Straight to fairview then 5 minutes to Connolly

I commute to Cherrywood from Swords when I can.

The tricky bit for you will be the five roundabouts at Swords. Real busy in the morning. I would think about taking the third exit on the first and going through Swords village.

The cut across from the coachmans to the airport roundabout can be tricky but get out early rather than later.

Reasonably plain sailing from there to Whitehall, and once the roadworks finish it will be a joy. Avoid going into the cycle lane on the path at airways industrial estate. You end up having to brake hard after the bus stop.

At the cross over at Whitehall the right turn down onto the N1 can be challenging. I have on occasion thought about not taking the hill but crossing over before the hill and going the wrong way up the one way. I wouldn't do it, of course, as that would be illegal ;)

After Whitehall it is really straight forward into town. Just be mindful of busses.

If you cross before the hill and walk across the 20m stretch of pavement, you're into a 2-way road in front of the houses. The only one-way bit of that is the exit towards Santry. http://goo.gl/maps/jDvvD

That road is in sh1te at the moment and is best avoided, particularly outbound.

I do Rush to city center several times per week. It's a handy straight forward spin.

Lusk-Blakes Cross-R132 all the way to Whitehall-N1-Swords Road-Dorset Street-left onto Belvedere Road-left onto NCR-Portland Row -right onto Amiens Street. (45mins to 1 hour).

At the Malahide Roundabout, Swords, pay attention to traffic exiting from the Feltrim Road. For some reason they seem to think they have priority over bikes.

Always be aware that some traffic from behind will cross your path to take the first exit at the many roundabouts and never ever go up the inside of a truck or bus.

As has been said, take care after the Coachmans where you have to move across especially in inclement weather where visability is poor. I prefer to go up the very end and make a quick crossing. If you cross to early, you'll have traffic moving at speed on both sides of you. If in doubt stop if you have to - don't take a chance. A cyclist was killed there last year.

On the cycle track near Morton Stadium (Tyre and Exhaust Place) be aware that some traffic will cross the cycle lane to take the slip road for Coolock Lane.

The ramp over the N1 - take off smartly up the hill signaling your intention to cross for the right exit. If the traffic beats you to it you may have to pull into the left and wait for a gap.

If you have any other queries let us know. Good luck.

I'm afraid Malahide isn't the centre of the universe. Unless the OP wished to extend the route, they'd have no reason to be going there! :p

The route via swords through whitehall was how I had intended to get to work, cheers for the responses lads.

only seeing this now - the best route (at least IMHO) is straight down the r132/n1 in by whitehall. it gets a bit boring sometimes tho. What are you riding - Ill keep an eye out for you.

Id echo what the other posters have said. I used to commute regulary by bike from Rush to the city center but haven't done much over the last few months. The only places as mentioned to be 100% on the ball is at the roundabout turn off for the Pavivllions shopping center and at the airport roundabout. The rest is straigthforward. It took me about 55 mins from Rush so it should be doable from Lusk in under an hour

Thanks again appreciate the feedback, I have done the morning run a couple of times to leixlip but normally go through swords out by the back of the airport towards blanch so good to know the areas to keep an eye out for.

    @Wishbone Ash

What are your thoughts on the new Donabate turn off, will the underpasses be used by cyclists/pedestrians or is it going to be one expensive white elephant?

I used them yesterday. They will save you having to stop at the lights. Will be nice when they are finished.

As lennymc says, they will save having to stop at the lights but I hope there will be a free flowing entry and exit from the cycle track back onto the road again.

The one for cyclists going from Swords to Donabate for example will probably be required more as they've made it quite difficult now for a cyclist to position themselves in the normal lanes during busy periods as the left lane is dedicated for M1(N) only.

from what i could see yesterday (its not fully finished) it looks like you will be able to mount the kerb at the traffic lights, follow the underpass under the roundabout, come out on the flyover, then follow the underpass over the second roundabout. Them lights can be a pain in the swiss, and can cost you several minutes on your commuter race!! :)

Is there something similar planned for the northbound lane does anyone know? Doesnt look like it.

Yes, there's an extensive system in place for northbound cyclists - see the red/pink twirly bits on Spooks' link. (PS - the map is on its side - north is to the right). The cycle route takes you under the slip road to the M1 Northbound and then back up onto the bridge and options for Hearse Road bound cyclists.
