“Rather than being about safety or aesthetics, power or efficiency, comfort or dynamism, our aspirations were ‘the best or nothing’ in every respect. No other car stands for the Mercedes-Benz brand promise more than the S-Class.” commented Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

IMO, its not near as good looking as the previous model.

From a looks perspective, the A8 is now easily the best looking of the A8, S Class, 7 Series trio.

They need to shave about a third of the grill off for a start

Interior looks great though, I'd say it'd be a nice place to sit.

After nosing around a new 740d recently I concluded that Mercedes really do blast the competition out of the water when it comes to ultimate luxury. Their level of detail goes way beyond BMW, and it looks a lot closer to a 6-figure car than the 7.
I like the 7-series, I may even pick up a nice used one some day, but if I were wealthy with a lot of money to spend on a new car in this class, I'd feel kinda ripped off if I bought one.
    This is the benchmark here!

I think that's the best looking S Class yet. Gorgeous from all sides.

    An S-class with a 4pot? Ewwwww

That grill is awful. Being able to see engine internals through it is a no no for me. Interior is beautiful though

Are ya well?? The A8 looks like a fat A4. I like the look of the 7er with the m sport pack but I think this new S class will look the business with the AMG bodykit. I hope they took plenty of styling from the new CLS class.

There is plenty of other options to choose from in the engine range department ;).

The lights remind me of this lad:

Looks fine in most other pics I've seen, that shot ain't flattering to be fair. Have to laugh at these threads on new designs tho - 90% will be unfavourable and pretty soon someone will be saying the rear-three-quarters look like a Kia Optima and the C-pillar resembles a 1983 Opel Kadett.

I don't think the previous model was particularly good looking, it was imposing for sure, but it wasn't a pretty car.

    Reminds me of an insignia

That is a fantastic thing. Stunning imo from all sides.
Wouldnt mind a 3 or 4 year old one of those in a few years.
Even the current car is fantastic.

It was never going to be pretty, but it sure looks imposing. I'd say it has tremendous road presence. It makes the 7 series look like a 3 series. The default choice for our few remaining dictators.

The lights look a bit small and the grille a bit big.

My money would be on an A8.

The current model S is a looker and has fantastic detail on the interior. Everything else is really second class. They are becoming silly cheap for what they are.The new one is not as pretty but looks fantastic on the inside. Looks quite butch actually.

omg, a two liter diesel doing 64mpg in an s-class. That will take getting used to.

The depreciation is fairly massive on older petrol ones.

    Mmmmm, A S550, 5.5 V8, near top spec.

    New, nearly €200k (apparently)

    no-image-large.gif

    Now €19k

Yup, thats €180k lost in 7 years (a bit like your average house!)

Headlights seem to have become the single most important design feature of modern cars

...sorry, but yet another epic fail on the front end design from Unterturkheim. The car may well be fab - and this iteration may well be the first S-Class ever to NOT suffer catastrophic depreciation.

But it's still something Namyang would have come up. Before even they copped on. Grille proporations are all wrong. 'Melted' front end thing - a hint of the first CLS.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
