Ok so I know the reason for this is to prevent TV content from being distributed, but why? I mean the old VHS tapes can easily be converted & viewed on a laptop so why the fuss about HD recordings?

Why not, how are you recording them? I record onto a usb stick, and simply drag and drop onto my computer, then the media players there just play them. I must add I haven't tried RTE Two HD recordings yet.
One caveat is that I use linux not Windows, but that should make no difference, and I use VLC media player, among others, which is available, free, for Windows too.

Yeah I record from Saorview all the time on my Ariva 150 and play them on (a) the Saorview TV in the bedroom (b) the Windows laptop (c) the Linux/Ubuntu laptop and (d) the MacBook. Almost always use VLC as the player - it pretty well handles everything you can throw at it whereas some software players don't like .ts files.

You might have to do some conversion if you want to use something proprietary like Apple TV but otherwise you should have no great problems (but - really - get VLC - it's free!).

You can distribute the files - I've sent some to US relatives (by shoving them onto Dropbox and letting them pull them down at their leisure) - but the .ts recordings are very big - especially the HD ones - you are talking maybe 1GByte per half hour. You can compress them but life's too short for much of that.

I don't really understand, my brochure specifically says :

"Note: Recorded programmes are saved onto the connected USB disk. If desired you can store/copy recordings on a computer; however, these files will not be available to be played on a computer. You can play the recordings only via your TV."

Yes of course I've tried them with VLC and all the others but no luck, and none of the pesky .ts files can seemingly be converted either... wish I knew why you guys have no such problems

What sort of Saorview / DVB-T receiver are you using? It may have encryption of some sort on all recordings.

Well, what brand is it? Is it an official Saorview receiver / tv or just a generic digital receiver box or Freeview HD tv?

Record 30 seconds. Upload to mediafire or some file sharing site and I'll take a look at it.

There is no restriction on HD recordings in Saorview spec.

OK, here's 37 seconds of 'Rusty the Robot' :) Thanks for your help guys.

    EDIT :

This is what I get when I try to play it on VLC :

undf means undefined...it doesnt know are you sure you copied the right file. If so maybe try rename the extention to .ts

Tried that already but got the same error. The recordings seem encrypted alright, as per the brochure, but dunno how you guys can play them on the ol' common garden VLC...

The PID's are not found in this stream. So there is some form of encryption enforced. It might not be deliberate and more likely lazy software lifting. Again HD or SD protective encryption is not part of Saorview specification AFAIK.

You need to contact info@walker.ie in Dublin and tell them to write a firmware update releasing this.

And then wait a very long time?

Well thanks for the effort, I've contacted them so I suppose we just have to wait and see...

Funnily enough there seems to be a firmware update for your model, maybe it will help :

Media info for that file .....
    Format : BDAV
    Format/Info : Blu-ray Video
    Format profile : No PAT/PMT
    File size : 27.1 MiB

Cannot play it in its present form.
It appears to be encrypted or otherwise a non-standard format as saved.

I assume that is the same as the recent over-the-air update - V3.8 .
It makes zero difference to recording, it will still be unplayable on any PC player.

Even if you record a radio programme from a Saorview radio channel on this box, it is the same type unreadable (by PC) file, not MP2 or MP3.

BTW - playing back an audio only file on this Saorview WP645TS-HD box (be it MP3 or the box's own recording of a radio channel) it seems impossible to 'fast forward' etc
Lets say you have recorded an hour long radio programme - you want to hear something 40 minutes in, you have to let the thing play for 40 minutes!!

The WP645TS-HD seems to use some sort of encryption alright. It divides the recording into 64MB files called chunk.0, chunk.1, chunk.2 etc. The first one is always empty. Media Player Classic detects the second piece as MPEG-TS but can't do anything with it.

This is meant to play Bdav files

It is not a BDAV file. The files recorded are in MPEG-TS format. This is a raw transport stream. Within this TS file there are a number of elements including but not limited to video and audio. The Video is MPEG4 AVC (H.264). The audio is MPEG2.

In normal Transports streams other valid descriptors are also presented. In this case the PMT is not present and PIDs dont exist if viewed outside the box it is connected to.

This is typical symptoms for one of two reasons.

    1. Short written software
    2. Intentional copy protection.

If its the latter it could have been left in having been ported over from the software written for the UK market (also Vestel chassis) who have copy protection for HD programming in their Freeview HD spec. Saorview does not have such required implementation.

Yes I've noticed the reference to copy protection in some of the UK discussions...

got a note from Walker saying their technical people were looking into it -
