since i started playing golf i have always had at least 3-4 playing partners every week with 6 available sometimes but lately there is only 3 of us left.3 of these have emigrated and 1 stopped playing about 2 years ago.im now left with just 2 lads but neither have been very keen to play since last summer and do on a very casual basis even though they are members and have handicaps.i find it a struggle now to get either of them out for a comp so i have someone to mark my card.has anyone any experience of just putting your name where there is a space on the timesheet?does it work out fine?do most people play in their weekly groups or just with randomers?

It works out fine, I find that most golfers fall pretty much 50/50 into the two groups; those that play with the same bunch of lads and those that just put their name on the sheet.

I often find I play better with randomers, especially if they are better than you.

Yeah I'd have no concerns re sticking name on the timesheet.

Have never come across an unpleasant playing partner that I can remember.

I joined a new club this year and this was a bit daunting. Although I know some members, I like to play early on a Sunday and that doesn't suit my friends. So I just put my name down on a gap in the time-sheet and play with whoever it may be. It doesn't take many rounds to get to know a good few people and before you know it, you'll be saying "their good to play with" "he's a bit slow" etc and picking your playing partners.

I just put my name down the day before and everyone is very friendly, I like to think its the same in most golf clubs. At the start I did say "I hope you dont mind me joining your group", but that's normally met with "sure, join in anytime". If you can play in some of the Matchplay, team comps and you'll meet even more members.

Have absolutely no fear about doing it. There are a lot of people that do it too.

It can be nice to play with yer mates every week but, at the end of the day, the main thing is getting out for a game of golf for most people. If that's your motivation - just do it. You'll learn stuff too from playing with different people and most lads are fairly sound.

I just throw my name down on timesheet at a time that suits me. Doesn't bother me who I play with. Would estimate I've played with over 40 different lads in past year. Most of them sound too I should add. It's actually great cause I know a lot more people to say hello to around the club than if I played with the same lads each week
