I'm playing Sunday morning in a club comp and my matchplay game is scheduled for Sunday evening!

Never played 2 rounds in one day so any advice?

    Bring a second battery :)

Nah, just drink lots in both rounds but especially the first, also make sure you eat during and between them.

Try to spend the bit in the middle off your feet, I would also strongly recommend a shower after the morning round if you dont normally, will help to stop you stiffening up.

27 is my max, didn't find it too bad.
Advice: Play good, it won't seem as long :)

Others that have done it will be best placed but if I was in your position: I'd stock up on food & water, maybe start eating & hydrating earlier in Round 1 than I would normally do so.

If local, and you have time, pop home for a shower/change of clothes for a change of scenery & freshen up.

Edit: that took a while to post, hadn't seen Greebos. We are a clique :)

Sleep well the night before. Or you'll be falling asleep on the first tee box before your match starts :)

I'd echo what the lads said. If you live close by, get yourself home to unwind, have dinner (and coffee!) and a shower/change of clothes etc... if you're playing well, 36 holes feels like a pleasant stroll... if you're playing badly, 9 holes feels like torture, ya know yourself :D

I once played 18 hole comp in Ballinasloe of a Thursday morning then came back to Moate had some dinner and played 18 hole comp there in the afternoon. Just so I could say I played 2 different courses full 18 in competition in the one day. Was very sore the next day and the last few holes in Moate were tough going. Go for it and good luck!

regular snacking while playing & a lightish meal in between keeps the blood sugar (hence energy) constant. hence in my experience eating heavily or drinking coffee between rounds isnt the best plan. get the carbs on board the day before.

I find stretching after the first round and again before the second stops the stiffness setting in.

Sure if you win your matchplay 10&8 you'll only be playing 28 holes:D

Shouldn't be a problem, played Druids Glen and Heath (non-competition) in a single day last year and I had 2hours travelling to get to Druids Glen so up early too.
Thought I'd be jaded but as long as you're not pulling a trolley you should be fine, I was grand afterwards and the next day.
All I'd advise is to get the lend of another electric trolley for the afternoon.

On a side bar, if you shoot say, 4under in the morning would you need to adjust your handicap for the afternoon?

I doubt I will ever shoot that low (:o) but I had thought about the handicap adjustment. Comp is running all weekend and last group is off around 5 with my match scheduled for 5.35 so I'm presuming I'll just be playing with my handicap as is.

I'd cancel my morning round and just play the club match play. If your not taking the club match play serious then play the two and best of luck!!

You'd swear you were walking to the South Pole.

Typical "American golf nut doing links tour of Ireland" tends to play 36 a day and then drive two hours to next venue. Repeat x 10 with perhaps two of those days just managing 18.

You'll be grand. It's the driving that's the hard bit.

harden the flock up ya wuss!!! I only get to play once a month lately so don't be worrying about playing 2 rounds in a day!!!

Don't worry about me, am just jealous!!

I'm with Charlie on this - I can only DREAM of playing more than twice a month, so twice in one day would probably push me over the edge. I'd be a gibbering wreck coming up to it (and probably a weeping, creaking wreck after it, but hey, it'd be worth it!!) :D:D

Enjoy it though Keano, and take the advice from the top of this thread - plenty of rest and stay off your feet if possible in between...

Did 36 holes in headfort a couple of times - old in morning new in afternoon - always got a golf cart for the afternoon...made things a lot easier

36 holes in a day is no problem, especially with a good break in between.

Just drink plenty of water / isotonic and frequent light snacks.

Fresh trolley battery is a must !

During the last hour of your 2nd round your mental strength will come under most pressure and this is where the regular hydration & snacking will keep your head in the game.

    Good luck & enjoy !

Would it not be up to you to cut yourself if you were inside the normal CSS? If I shot 40 points in the morning I would not be comfortable playing off the same handicap that afternoon.

Why don't you just get a 0.1 in the morning and note where the flags are etc.

I would agree, depending on your category you can probably make a good stab at estimating CSS based on SSS and determine if a difference in playing handicap is warranted, Im sure if you were on 9.4 and shot 100 most here would play off 10 in the match for the extra shot...it has to work both ways.

    I couldnt disagree more.
Playing to get 0.1 back is cheating...I'll give the benefit of the doubt and assume you are joking...

I was only half joking, what I meant was not to get cut.

You do realise that this is Ireland though....the land of the 0.1s

Pint of Guinness in between each round. Only the one mind you. Get your iron levels up, but you wont be drunk standing on the first tee for your second round

Please tell me you are joking? You are encouraging fellas to apply the .1 themselves?

    Agreed,
if you think too much about how much effort it is, it will feel like a big effort. If you treat it as two long walks it's no big deal.

That said, I agree strongly with taking a shower, stretching and eating little but often during the day.

If I may be blunt - bring vaseline for the bits where there'll be friction. It hurts like hell for days otherwise.

If you play in prison it might

No, I'm just saying that most people would want the extra shot, but probably not want to get cut before a match.
If you played a match off the wrong handicap because you didnt cut yourself then you are DQ'd.

For clarity, a player is responsible for reductions in the event that they are playing again before CSS etc has been determined, a player is not and cannot perform an upward adjustment. There is no penalty from playing from too low a handicap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28 chef89

    - A decent sleep and a decent breakfast.
    - Light snacks and lots of water, especially in the first round.
    - Don't sit down straight away after round 1, shower ASAP. If you can't shower at least wash your feet and change your socks, surprisingly refreshing in between rounds.
    - The better you play the easier it is to walk.... So play well!!
    - Sudocream/ Baby Lotion :P

    Best of luck!

"Im sure if you were on 9.4 and shot 100 most here would play off 10 in the match for the extra shot...it has to work both ways." Speak for yourself mate, I'd imagine "most" here wouldn't dream of applying the .1 themselves. You might, but I don't think you speak for the majority on this one.

As was said you can't increase your own handicap but you can and should cut it

My original post was poorly worded, what I meant was that most would *want* the extra shot in the match.

Clearly I wouldnt apply 0.1 to myself as its not permissible for a player to do so.

I thought I'd explicitly clarified my point in the post you quoted, but guess not.

Go out to local at 2200 hrs night before, get 4 in before 2300 and 3 at closing a massive curry after, then a pint for lunch between rounds.

Also a massive fry in morning.

You will be grand by the 34th hole.

Above is a typical Portugal golf trip.

I've often played 36 holes in a day(more a few times),usually when playing team events for the club,of course you will tire towards the end of the second round but unless you're playing a really hilly course or are fairly unfit(you looked fit enough to me) it should'nt affect you too much.
as mentioned before bring a spare battery and get something to eat between rounds.
If your match is tight the old bit of adrenaline usually kicks in,
you'll be fine, best of luck with it:)

i'd love to have this problem.....all work and no play makes chalkie sad:(
