First build advice

I figured this has been done already but don't see anything in the search.

I am embarking on my first build, a Scott Speedster s30 frame is supposedly on it's way to me, which will be dressed up with full 105 5700 and Open Pro's on Ultegra Hubs. Though all I currently have in my possession are a lonely pair of shifters.

Aside from the usual pitfalls, making sure seatpost, bb, derailler clamp etc etc are all correct, are there any other potential pitfalls I should be aware of when assembling, or tips that might speed up the process, thanks!

    Full 5700?! Very nice!

I know what you're like with bikes, so don't really see to much for you to worry about. Get a good cable cutter, and you'll obviously need to get an extra tool or two (bottom bracket tool), and you should be fine. If the headset and star nut are not installed, they're the only bits that are awkward, but it looks like they're looked after, right?

What's the finishing kit for the bike?

Cutting cable housing to the right length. That stuff isn't cheap if you are buying a set (jagwire, etc.) and cutting too short can really mess everything up.

Measure twice, cut once and if in doubt, leave a bit of extra length.

Get some good quality cable cutters, housings need to be cut clean otherwise the ends can get squashed and result in poor shifting.

Make sure your shifters are installed level to one another. This can be hard to do by eye and even a small misalignment can make the ride feel funny.

Check your chain! Length but also direction, some chains have to be installed a certain way to run smoothly. Also, a chain is most likely to fail if it has been installed incorrectly. And be careful with the shimano connecting pin, the pilot head snaps off quite easily and you might face another trip to the shop before you can ride your bike.

Take your time. Yes, you can speed it up, but if it is your first time then it's best to do it right rather than do it quickly. As my good friend Swiss Tony always says "Building a bike is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman..."
