Interview - supplementary material

    Ahoy all,

So, I'm back on the job application trail again - sigh! The past two summers I've noticed other candidates bringing folders of stuff into their interviews with them. Does anyone know what kind of stuff they might be showing? And, indeed, if bringing supplementary material with you may be advantageous? For instance, our school received the 6th Yr 'Year Book' today. In it, many of my 6th years kindly mentioned me in their profiles - perhaps I could bring this to show, assuming, of course, I interview at all.

    Many thanks.

Back on the interview rounds meself and was thinking the same thing.

Was thinking of showing a year book I produced or maybe visualisations of lessons or blogs?

Or is it all a bit of overkill?

Also on the lookout now and reckon you have to shout as loud as you can to be heard with whatever ammo you got....BUT...there is a line...i know from experience that if you go to far you end up coming across a bit like an ego maniac, can definitely be overkill.

So what I suggest is to bring references and copy of CV first and then maybe one unusual thing that shows what your about. I know of teachers who brought a demonstration of their work and it got them their job. I think the year book sounds fantastic and is a testament to a en excellent job done. I might get ours and write my name into it ;)

my initial reaction is no way! i think experience, verbal explanation of positive contributions to your previous schools and an academic record typed on your cv. i would find a book of how amazing am i to be mortifying to be honest. maybe im just not goods enough at selling myself though. its an interesting question. i would love to hear what anyone who has sat on an interview panel has to say.

I know, that would be my initial reaction too. But when you see people going in with reams of supplementary material it makes you wonder. I was just wondering if anyone knows if it's in any way beneficial.

I think just bringing yourself , possibly your glowing references, and giving a professional interview is all that's required.

Hmm thinking similar as well. I did loads of extra curricular activities this year and have photos etc but was presuming I can't show students face etc in pics? What about crowd photos? Any ideas on whether or not it'd be ok to use these?

I have no idea. I'm as confused as I was when I posted, to be honest.

Would they not have the CV from when you applied? Is it not on the basis of the initial CV that you'd be called for interview?

Often there's just a very restrictive application form and no CV required for application.

I interviewed yesterday based on an online application, brought copies of my CV for each member of the panel and they seemed quite impressed. Every little helps :)

First time I seen this was when I was recently on an interview panel. One person brought in a folder of supplementary material and proceeded to take up all their allotted time going through it. Needless to say they didn't get the job.

It's overkill, and a bit wierd tbh.

Thanks a million, StillWaters. It's great to get feedback.

May I ask, what did they have in it? I'm curious.

I should clarify this was for further ed, not secondary school, so content not really relevant to most posters. But members of the panel who are seasoned secondary school interviewers found it bizarre also.

Another strange thing was interviewees who brought a laptop and just plonked it on the table unopened, anyone any idea what that was about?

No that is weird. maybe they had been planning on showing a powerpoint but chickened out?

We have to be realistic, interviewers really dont have time for anything extra . They have a strict question list and a limited time in which to see everyone.
