I mentioned in a previous thread how I thought victor belfort was hugely overrated.
What other fighters do you think are overrated, whether its from getting undeserved title shots or just ranked higher than they should be?

Frank Mir would be another for me
Apart from nogueira he has no other big name on us w list yet is nearly always ranked top 5 heavyweights.

    JDS.
I've said it loads of times before. There's no denying he's a great talent but he hasn't shown anything that says he's unbeatable as people used to think.

I know he's no longer with the UFC but Rampage. He won fighter of the year in 200y by being the first person to KO chuck in the octagon and a hard fought fight with Henderson fair enough. For the next 5 years he didn't improve one aspect of his game. Wrestling defence, BJJ or wrestling. Even his striking his footwork stayed the same. He didn't improve his movement, speed etc. never learned how to check a leg kick. He made his name and then chased money fights.

Alessio Sakara. I know he's not rated highly, but despite him being in the UFC for years, I have never actually seen any of the fights he has won.

    Pat Barry

    "The best Kickboxing in MMA"

Wasn't he an average Kickboxer too? (I'm open to correction).

Every time he gets into the Octagon they act as if he's this Super Striker who will knock everyone out. Has he ever won 2 fights in a row in the UFC?

Leonard Garcia "Oh he always comes to war, you have to respect his heart"

I'd respect it more if he had the ability to land a strike every once in a while instead of windmilling for the fences.

+1 for this and Pat Barry

I'd say Clay Guida personally, but I don't know if anyone even rates him

Urijah Faber - Can't win a title fight since he lost the WEC belt.

Martin Kampmann - Most fighters with decent standup either beat him or he doesn't look good beating them

Sam Stout - Standup seriously overrated, has had a fair few Split Decisions on his record.

Diego Sanchez - Went to 155 got a title shot by beating Stevenson and Guida (in a war but very close fight) then gets manhandled by BJ and now is going nowhere in the UFC.

I know nobody rates Tim Sylvia anymore but there was a time he was the most over rated fight in the UFC. I know he managed to win the title but he was successful because of being big and awkward, rather than any real skill IMO.

Chael Sonnen. Great entertainment though. Made for WWE.

I think bisping is actually underrated. He is probably the most technical boxer in mma and has amazing footwork and timing. Just lacks that extra power.

Must say Keith hackney is a very random choice!! Surely people must know who the hell he is before he can be overrated!!

Think Faber is a bit harsh. I don't ever see him beating Barao, Aldo or Cruz but he continues to beat people. He has turned into an ultimate gate keeper in Bantamweight. He's been top 5 in his division for 8 years. Don't see many people emulate that.

Probably a controversial one but I think randy couture was very overrated. Yes he won a few titles back in the day when he was given a title shot coming off two loss and was being handed title shots left right and centre.

He has just one big name on his record and that's Liddell who when on to avenge that defeat twice.

His reputation was cemented by the Tim Sylvia fight, (another title shot coming off a loss) and we all know how good Sylvia ended up being!

In what parallel universe are Vitor & Tito not "Big Names"?

I meant to say elite fighter rather than big name and there is a big difference.

I will concede that Tito would have been considered an elite fighter at the time and won alot of his big fights unlike vitor.

I dunno, Joe Son thought he was the balls!

Most overated fighter ever IMO is Rampage, just a one trick pony who never had the brains to evolve into what is required in todays MMA

That's a fućked up story about joe son! Just finished reading up on it there.
Looks like he deserved every one of those punches to the balls he got from hackney!

I think Rampage is definitely top 10 at the weight ever. His 2 wins over Chuck were brilliant and he showed a great strategy in the first fight. In reality very few people were able to out strike a top chuck.

For me his most impressive win was the Hendo fight. It wasn't a huge surprise that he won but he won in a very impressive fashion.
I know Hendo's been outwrestled before but its almost always been to guys with a good shot. Rampage clinched with Hendo and outwrestled him for much of the fight. This was before the H bomb was his signature and when he was thought to have the best clinch in the whole sport.

The problem with Rampage was he started fighting for a pay check when his mind and body weren't in it anymore. He went from a dynamic boxer to someone who couldn't move properly and who just wanted people to stand in front of him and trade.

I think that Kampmann is very over rated. His wrestling and BJJ are excellent and so is his offensive striking but defensively hes one of the worst strikers in the UFC. He keeps his hands low, shoulders down, chin up and never moves his head. His head is constantly centred and he gets hit hard in all his fights. If he had good defence I'd see him as top 5 in the division.

Tim Sylvia while boring was very effective and was vastly underrated.

Randy was well looked after but in fairness was a great fighter

Tito was as elite as they come, at the time he was on another level, Belfort also was amazing as a young man, very like Tyson in Boxing, injuries and his sister been kidnapped played there toll on Vitor for years.

    couldn't disagree more.
Was a phenomenal talent. To beat hughes like that when hughes was considered unbeatable was amazing. Fighting in loads of different weight. pro debut straight into the UFC, no easing his way in, got his bjj black belt after just three years of training, first non-american to win bjj worlds.
the guy was just a freak!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,424 ✭✭✭garhjw

Yes he was a very good fighter and very talented. However, whyi think he is overrated is because he didnt apply himself properly. He was out of shape in too many fights.

Yep, how many times did we hear over his last few fights "This BJ Penn is in the best condition he's ever been in" or "BJ's cardio is through the roof, he's been walking underwater with huge rocks to help"

Then he comes out and is fcuked after a round :rolleyes:

    This thread just got silly!

The guy has been sh*t quite a bit, but he's a Double weight Champion and the best LW of all time.
