If anyone is interested in this car:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/5035587

Then please be aware that we have looked after it on and off for the last 10 years through 3 different owners and we have lots of service history for it. The information I have may be of interest to any prospective buyer, particularly the mileage readings, for example we put a timing belt on it in June 2010 at 112,000 miles :pac:

I think someone has entered 150000 km and dd has convergent it to 93200 miles.

Looks to be an honest mistake I think or at worst misleading.

You'd need to see the dials to know if it has been wound back

    maybe it is a mistake

I really don't understand why someone would clock an 01 polo, has to be a mistake.

Very hard to see the speedo but it looks a digit short

    6 digits

Why are they going so fast....

Was thinking the same. Seems a lot of effort for a car that is worth barely over a grand whether its clocked or not.

It's very hard to tell and the figures do work out correctly if you reverse the conversion.

I'm not saying something fishy isn't going on but I think the benefit of the doubt lies with the seller

Personally I pity anyone who buys one of those, clocked or not...... :pac:

I don't think this is an honest mistake. This is the third time they have listed it. We reported it the first two times and it was taken down both times. Now it has been re-listed with the reg blanked out so Donedeal won't take any action.

The actual mileage is 157,000 miles or something along those lines.

Before posting the car up on here and reporting it, why didn't you call the owner pretending to be intrested in the car and ask them what mileage is on it, that way you would be pretty sure if it is clocked or not. You also seem or at least come across to be assuming that the seller has clocked the car which might not be the case at at all, it might be someone else who clocked it for all you know.

I know you are only trying to be helpful to warn people off a clocked car but without any real evidence, you could be hurting someone who is completely innocent in the process.

Edit just seen that Alan has been texting the seller, it seems you are correct about the mileage.

Im sure George had a pretty solid idea that it was clocked before he went reporting to Donedeal and mentioning it here.

    Listed as sold now!

I sincerly doubt he had tbh. He only had a hunch it was clocked because it was readvertised with the same mileage three times. Id hardy call that a "pretty solid idea that it was clocked as it may have been a misprint.

Look, the guy is a very well thought of and respected car mechanic on here. He used to often work on the car and mainly works on cars from the VAG group. When he see's the car in the garage and presumably has documentation of the mileage that was on it as being 112k, then see's it up at 93k miles it's a very fair assumption to make.

He's also not stupid and should he have thought it was a misprint wouldn't have posted it in a public forum possibly damaging the reputation of his garage.

    Leave it out.

GD seen the car with 112k at least in the past
    Al's text confirms 93k
Defo same car - dent on pass. wing and same stereo etc.

    ...therefore clocked

As said george is probably the last person on here who'd make a false post as you suggest.

I only raised concerns as I thought it could have been a genuine mistake and didn't want GD getting hassle because of it.

After PMing George I'm happy he is happy that its not the case here.

All evidence suggests its not a mistake.

I hope someone saved the sellers number to keep checking for cars in the future

Again I ask whats the point in going through the effort of clocking a car thats worth next to nothing either way?

(Im not disputing that it happened, I just dont see the point).

Probably got it cheap due to mileage and clocked it at home. Could easily mark the price up a few hundred and turn a car like that around quickly.

Handy money if you can get it.

Honest folk would consider the risk not worth it but have you ever heard of a private seller being done for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Would it really be worth much less with 155k on it compared to 95k? Its barely worth a grand either way.

It all depends how much he paid and sold it for.

I agree completely that its all a bit senseless.

Easier to sell, easy to do if you have the gear. That's about all that's to it I reckon.

Yeah I guess it might make it easier to sell alright.

Is it that easy to do? I have no idea how cars are clocked to be honest. I presume they dont put them on rollers and drive in reverse for a few hours? :P

It seems completely senseless to me as well. The car sold last week for €1000, now it is back up for €1450 after being clocked. They are obviously operating a low margin business model!

Lets say they sold it for 300 profit.

It's a handy way of making a few extra €€€ a week cash into your hand. Although I still don't know what the attraction of doing it is.

George do you know if the seller handed the book over?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

I don't know what was done regarding the book. It was one of the lads that works for us who sold it last week via the second Donedeal ad I linked to at the start of the thread, i.e. the one with the correct mileage listed!

Spot on I'd say. Even if you're only making one or two hundred on each car you sell, the quicker you can turn them over, the more money you make. Add to that the Irish mindset that cars explode once they go over 100k miles, regardless of how they were looked after, and I can see why it's done.
