What is DEIS 1? Im thinking its a school for children from underprivileged areas? I imagine the small classes are great for children who may need extra support, but if your child was not in need of extra support would the classes be less challenging and less stimulating for him? When applying for secondary would it be an obstacle to the better schools or a plus?

No I do not think the classes would be any less stimulating and challenging.

I am not a teacher though.

DEIS schools have the same classes and cover the same courses as every other school. You won't notice any real difference except the smaller class size and there may be extra activities available free of charge or at a low price like sport or music. Mine also got free lunches and milk.
Secondary schools have their 'feeder schools' and that will decide if you get preference or not.
