    Hi lads,

I have only about 1500 to 2000 to spend including sale price of my 02 mondy diesel with high miles. I need a diesel preferably as I do 35000 miles a year with 80 miles a day on motorway. Any advice on what to go for next would be appreciated, please. I am not averse to estates, either!

The last two "yokes" I had were not the best of buys......the mondy and a 406 diesel.

If you have a smart comment please save it for someone else.

    many thanks in anticipation

At that money you need to forget make and model and look at the actual car in front of you. A Mondeo and a 406 would be towards the top of my list, but you have to find a well cared for example.

Unfortunately money is tight and don't want to borrow if I can. Ok will bear them in mind and look at what's in front of me. Beggars can't be choosers and all that......

Don't get me wrong - it is doable, it'll just take care and time. Limerick Man wrote a very good guide to buying a used car - it's stickied at the top of the page and i'd advise you to have a good read through that first.

The old type Toyota Avensis or Carina in diesel are a great car although they are hard to come by.

Avensis for the win fugly car but i've put 100,000 miles on mine and spent about 400 euros excluding normal "consumables" and servicing. Has gone through passed NCT three times since I got it without doing anything apart from a wash and a few bulbs.

I put 200-300 miles a week and it never misses a beat.

    Cheers.
