Linux Mint 14 and Win7 Question

    Hi,

I have a office with 3 pcs and one with is basically used for downloading stuff and backup for the other 2 win7 pcs. The backup machine was running Vista which got corrupted and I had no backup disk so decided to install Mint 14.

Mint worked great out of the box for web browsing etc, but when I tried to share a folder on it and connect to it with the win7 box I could not get it to work. I can see the mint box from win7 sometimes when browsing the network but cannot connect. I have read at least 100 webpages and forum posts over the past day and a half to no avail.

It seems that there are many well meaning individuals willing to answer but vital parts of the puzzle are missing. Is Mint just not ready for prime time?
Do I try another distro? Go back to Windows?

Is there any newbie step by step guide to doing this?

    Thanks

    orac53, I assume you're a linux newbie, right?
    Do you have samba installed?

    Check out this: https://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/295044-sharing-files-and-folders-between-linux-mac-and-windows

and post here whatever you're doing (especially if there are errors)

Tried this and still no go. Can see the mint box from win7 but when I try to connect I get "Windows cannot access \\MintPC"

Turned off windows firewall, no difference.

Thanks for the link, will try suggestion in the other post later.

What's in the samba logs on linux mint side?

That you read lots & tried lots over the last few days shows you are making an effort but does little to enable others to help.

You'd need to provide a little more - like the logs PrzemoF requested and/or the samba configuration file. Plus the details of the steps you took.

I found these tips were good suggestions on what to double check.

Ok, tried all the options outlined above plus a few others, no go.

I have posted smb.conf and log below.

    Thanks

    smb.conf

    #
    # Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
    #
    #
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
    # are not shown in this example
    #
    # Some options that are often worth tuning have been included as
    # commented-out examples in this file.
    # - When such options are commented with ";", the proposed setting
    # differs from the default Samba behaviour
    # - When commented with "#", the proposed setting is the default
    # behaviour of Samba but the option is considered important
    # enough to be mentioned here
    #
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
    # "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
    # errors.
    # A well-established practice is to name the original file
    # "smb.conf.master" and create the "real" config file with
    # testparm -s smb.conf.master >smb.conf
    # This minimizes the size of the really used smb.conf file
    # which, according to the Samba Team, impacts performance
    # However, use this with caution if your smb.conf file contains nested
    # "include" statements. See Debian bug #483187 for a case
    # where using a master file is not a good idea.
    #

    #======================= Global Settings =======================

    [global]

    ## Browsing/Identification ###

    # Change this to the workgroup/NT-domain name your Samba server will part of

    # This can be either the interface name or an IP address/netmask;
    # interface names are normally preferred
    ; interfaces = 192.168.1.1/8 eth0

    # Only bind to the named interfaces and/or networks; you must use the
    # 'interfaces' option above to use this.
    # It is recommended that you enable this feature if your Samba machine is
    # not protected by a firewall or is a firewall itself. However, this
    # option cannot handle dynamic or non-broadcast interfaces correctly.

    # We want Samba to log a minimum amount of information to syslog. Everything
    # should go to /var/log/samba/log.{smbd,nmbd} instead. If you want to log

[I don't use samba, so ... I might be wrong]

    Try:
    testparm /etc/samba/smb.conf

to make sure your config is OK.

Another option is to try a minimal useful config:
    [global]
    workgroup = WORKGROUP

    [homes]
    guest ok = no
    read only = no

    https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/install.html#simple-example

Is your windows PC working as WINS server? If not add
    wins support = yes

to smb.conf file in [global] section:

    [global]
    workgroup = WORKGROUP
    wins support = yes

    [homes]
    guest ok = no
    read only = no

I have tried all suggestions and I still cannot connect from windows, it is actually worse then when I started because when I first installed Mint I could actually print from the win7 pc to a laser printer on the mint machine. Now Windows cannot even see the printer.

So I have to move back to windows because I need it for business. It's amazing that such a basic requirement as networking with Windows should be so difficult to setup. It should be possible to do this with a few mouse clicks if Linux is ever going to make headway in the desktop market.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Well I really like Linux Mint and it was ideal for the machine I was using it on so I reloaded it and finally resolved the issue after much reading.

It was the Mint firewall the was blocking access from Win 7.

    sudo ufw allow samba

    That fixed it.

The only minor problem I now have is the my Epson 2580 photo scanner will not work. More reading...
