Recently in the last week , the CD/DVD drive keeps going missing from the computer.

If you do a restart the computer can see it again and it might stay that way for any length of time, then all of a sudden it will be gone again.

Windows 8 OS upgrade from 7, upgraded back in november this problem is recent.

Any ideas or will i order a new drive ? I already tried moving the sata cable to a new port but the problem still occurs. There is still power to the drive and it will open and close, just goes missing.

    EDIT:
Just tried a restart to fix it and that didnt work this time, now after the restart there is no power, i assume cause the mobo isnt detecting it. will try another restart.

check the sata cable to the dvd drive and from drive to motherboard..sounds like a loose connection. or a faulty sata cable...make sure the machine is switched off first and unplugged and ground yourself by touching a radiator before opening case.

If restart always temporarily resolves the issue then it's a software issue.

I found a potential fix on microsoft website, apparantly its an issue they know about which occurs in vista, 7 and 8. Something to do with a check file being incorrect.
I did run the tool on the microsft website ( think they call it mr fixit) and it did correct a check file in the registry so far today its fine, so fingers crossed thats it.
