    So today Reilly announced the new hospital groupings. He said no acute hospital will close as a result of the reorganisation of hospitals. The idea seems to be that the bigger hospitals will carry bigger surgeries, with smaller hospitals caring for the smaller treatments.

    Following on from mass protests in Waterford, no acute services will be lost - it will retain cancer, cardiology and trauma services. It will become a major teaching hospital. Budget will be controlled by a separate board of management, consisting of equal representation for Waterford & Cork on the board and a CEO managing the board. That was the major focus on these groupings following the mass protests and campaigns. Sadly, it appears that the groups campaigning against the groupings are still not happy with today's announcement.

    I think the idea of having major tasks being done in the bigger hospitals makes more sense and allowing smaller services to the smaller hospitals would benefit the community more. It seems like better use of resources and address the excess waste, to a degree, that is associated with the health service. The smaller hospitals are being told they wont be closed as they are essential to the grouping idea. Waterford looks to benefit from the teaching addition and the threat of closure and "mass loss of jobs" was addressed.

    The new groups are;
