Haven't played the guitar over recent years but I'm about to buy a new acoustic!
Is it worth investing the extra dough for a solid wood or is a solid/laminate mix fine for a recreational player?

As Martin said, solid top is the most important. Most of the sound quality comes from the top wood, the back and sides are more important for volume but do influence the sound somewhat. There are a lot of really great sounding affordable guitars with solid tops, a few that spring to mind are Yamah FG720s, Tanglewood TW115ST, TW45ns, and many many more. If you want to see the difference the back and sides make try find a TW115AS and TW115ST and compare the difference or else a Yamaha APX 500,700, and 900. The yamahas progress from all solid, to solid top, to all solid as you move up the higher numbers so that is a great method of comparison.

With an acoustic, all your tone comes from the guitar itself. You don't have the variables of the amp of effects. Most people agree a solid top is best. Having said that, acoustics can vary and some solids can sound worse than some laminates. Rarely, but can happen. Moreso than an electric, probably best to try a few out. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder and if you don't like your acoustic's tone, there's not alot you can do about it.

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated!

Decided I'm not going to pay the extra for a solid acoustic & I'll just buy one with a solid top & laminated sides/back.
