    Hi all,

I'm new here and I am looking for advice about what car to buy so i hope ye can help! I've just sold my wife's old 2007 primera and got very little for it (depreciation hit it hard). I just need advice on what are good family cars for around €15-€17k max which wouldn't depreciate hugely and would be safe and reliable family transport.
    Thanks,
    John

That model Primera was never loved and they have been discontinued for a number of years now so depreciation was always going to be hard on them. These days anything petrol in large family size cars is going to depreciate heavily because people only want diesels but your driving style and annual mileage need to be enough to warrant buying a diesel car at present.

I suppose something like a Qashqai would be a good option, even the petrol models still hold their value second hand:

Hi lads, thanks for the suggestions but she'll needs diesel and that qashqai is too small the Mondeo seems good value though will it depreciate well? Also I was looking at one of these this morning and the wife liked it what do ye think?

mondeo wont hold its value as well as the likes of a passat or avensis.
Audi looks nice but you are paying a lot for the badge
    16k for an a4 with 55000 miles
12K for a skoda superb with same engine [i think] 47000 miles http://www.carzone.ie/search/Skoda/Superb/CLASSIC-/36113684472685200/advert?channel=CARS

Crazy money for an old shape A4 and they have less space than a Qashqai.

€17,000 for a 5 year old, old model A4? Are you mad?

At least the engine is fairly reliable, but pretty damn tight in the rear seats for a family wagon and a very spartan interior. Carrying a big 4 ring premium for something that is very outdated now.

It is the Limited Edition model though. That added Chrome Trim, Alloys and I think, a centre armrest. Can't see the armrest in the pictures though.

If you like that, why not spend the same amount of money on a car 3 years newer, with a better engine and more equipment inside - http://www.carzone.ie/search/SEAT/Exeo/2.0-TDI-/34313610332342420/advert?channel=CARS

Will depreciate like a stone though......

What about a Skoda Superb. Something like http://cars.donedeal.co.uk/for-sale/cars/5013979

I Like the superb but would the 1.9 tdi not be very under powered? Also looking at these http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volvo/S60/D3-2.0-D/34813658648629330/advert?channel=CARS

The Superb is a bit underpowered, but it's not as bad as you'd think with the 1.9Tdi.

The Volvo is a cracker to drive. Shame it's an ES rather than SE, but there's not that much difference in the specification, and the 163ps 5 cylinder engine in the one linked is an absolute cracker.

Not great space in the rear seats, and a the boot isn't the best for loading lots of stuff in to. Much better prospect than the A4, but I do fear they will devalue a lot quicker than Audi/BMW - or even Skoda.

Would a Toyota Prius be spacious and reliable ?

Don't know why anyone buying a used car worries much about depreciation.
If its depreciated more then you get it cheaper.

You have to remember that if say your 07 primera was worth €2000 less than say a passat, you'd have paid a lot more for the passat in the first place.

wouldnt touch this as its the old model and looks totally dated imo and will depreciate quickly because the new model came in late o8

the 1.9 in that a4 is a superb engine, very well proven. suspension arms are an issue and the ride isn't good and the price is crazy but it does fit your criteria on being safe, reliable and you will still get good money for it when it comes to selling it. if it was my money i would look at the superb with the same engine especially the estate, much nicer looking

http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Mondeo/TITANIUM/33413650211849750/advert?channel=CARS this is a high spec 2011 mondeo the facelifted model. it looks like it has been imported from the uk but seems good value.

It's not a superb engine. It's reliable, but crap in every other respect.

In an expensive car I'd also like refinement, a decent amount of power with a nice power delivery with a broader, more linear power band, just like every other car in it's class!

like what a bmw 2.0d is it or an a4 with 2.0tdi

and of course the problems that go with those cars with the extra power. my point was its well proven, he is looking for a safe reliable car that wont depreciate like mad. jesus if you want performance buy a petrol or 6 pot diesel. for what it is its a great engine

Yes to both, extremely reliable, and surprisingly spacious. Also currently getting 59MPG on short suburban runs.

Surely if he's looking for a reliable car he should avoid an A4 completely regardless of what's under the bonnet then? A Honda Accord is a better car with a much better engine, or a Subaru Legacy either.
