I have narrowed my search down to two diesel cars, the Honda Accord 2.2 GT EX or the Audi A4 TDI Executive 143BHP, both 2010 and near enough in price with the Accord having 45000 miles and the A4 55000 miles on the clock.

Can I get some of peoples ideas on which one they would go for or opinions on either car please.

Guess which one I'm going to recommend!!

    Here's some objective reasoning on the same topic;

Accord. More reliable, more spacious, less common, more comfortable.

My dad has that Accord and I've been driving for a few days now long & short journeys & I have to say it's very comfortable all round.

And sure it's a Honda you can't go wrong! :P

Had an Accord for a couple of days, not long after the new model came out in Ireland. It was probably the easiest car to jump in to, get comfy and start racking up the miles, from anything I've driven.

Driven plenty of A4's of all sorts of spec, power etc and they do very little for me - give me a Superb over an A4 any day.

Accord is the nicer car all round - only reason I can think of why anyone would prefer an A4 is badge snobbery.

    Accord hands down. Beautiful car.

    Honda !!!

A4 Lovely interiors but their diesels these days are not so reliable, lots of flywheel failures, wiping out any 10-15 mpg gain over the petrols.

VAG aren't the only ones with flywheel failures though these days, though I think the Accord is more reliable.

Och sure you're not comparing like with like there Horse. The A6 would be the one on the same platform as the Superb.

I'd more likely compare an A4 with an Octy.

    Definitely get an Accord.

    You're wrong on both counts.

I'd be inclined to go with the Accord too. A4s have become so common these days that they just blend into the background. And the interior is some way off audis of old.

Was just looking through this site the other day about some recalls of diesel honda accords and other manufacturer recalls with problems there having..... http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/searches/search.asp

As I have An A4 B6. I say go for the Accord. A4's are to common now.

Honda is lovely car but I've heard reports of being v heavy on diesel if you drive them on a bit - i.e. 30 mpg, and max 40 mpg on long drives taking it handy. Not sure if other owners have seen this?

A4 is overpriced and small inside. Pedals are badly off-set too and I honestly think its looks dreadful unless with mega wheels and skirts

Absolute rubbish. My wife had the 2.2 CDTI engine in a CRV, brick of a car with 4WD and on long runs with the cruise control set to 60mph, you could get 50mpg out of it.

Reduce weight, add in aerodynamics and upgrades in technology and you can see that those figures of 40mpg are just rubbish.

I took a 2.2 CDTI Civic to the other side of belfast and back to bray once and with the cruise set at 60mph again, i averaged 65mpg. Granted its probably a lighter car.

    In regards to reliablity:

You can't get an idea of the MPG by resetting the trip computer before each trip, the best way to get a fair Idea is the brim to brim method after using a full thank.

The best way is to not reset the trip computer and over time that will give you a good idea as to your average over the lifetime with the car.

In the A4 B6 I had I had 2 trip computers, one I used to reset usually at each trip to see what I got on that trip, I could get 50-55 mpg ish, some smaller town trips I could get as low as 38 mpg.

After 100,000 miles the average worked out at 48 mpg. So that's what the car averaged over the 100,000 miles I had it.

So after 100,000 miles @ 48 mpg I used 9472 Litres and in today's money 1.53 per litre that would cost, 14,492 Euro's That's a huge amount of money on fuel !!!

That's the cost of a car in itself, I wonder sometimes do people actually work out the cost of running a car, the car repayments inc interest + depreciation + fuel ? a lot of money !

Maybe they drink a lot of juice when driving at motorway speed limit, i.e if you set cruise to 80 mph would it drop a lot?? My friend was ignoring the fuel computer and using the brim to brim method to calculate

I was surprised myself to see such low figs to be honest as the official CO2 emissions are low.

The MPG anc Co2 figures are rubbish, I bet the real C02 emissions, if you car about things like that are well above the stated figures.

You should really look up the NEDC fuel economy tests, they are almost laughable.

Are people converting their MPG using U.S mpg or IMP mpg ?

U.S mpg will make it seem you are getting a lot more, 65 IMP is 54 mpg U.S.

    EDIT

US mpg would make it appear less.

That's why L/100km is so much easier to gauge fuel consumption. We fuel the car in litres and modern cars record km/s on their OBC.

    MPG is a bizarre gauge.

Also, another vote for the Accord.

Indeed it is easier, when filling in litres, but I think most of us are still used to imperial mpg, I am anyway despite having the Prius over 2 years. It's what I grew up with.

No, your mate's Accord is probably broken! They'll get around 50mpg with ease no matter what method you use to calculate them. Driven hard, any diesel will drop at least 30% in efficiency.

I'd guess the Accord is also broken or being rallied. They should average well into the 40's without problem.

I'd also look at the VW Passat CC, it's more stylish, they are generally better equipped and a bit more exclusive than an A4.

The pedals in the A4 are ridiculously badly set up, well over to the right and while there is a footrest to the the left of the clutch there is not enough room to squeeze our your foot past. Manual transmission must have been an afterthought.
