Anyone read the article in the farming indo about the charolais bull infertility case? Misfortune on both sides.

Would it be practical to fertility test bulls on the day they are sold? Surely this would prevent cases like this.

TBH I think that he is laying on the costs a bit thick. 125 to bring home, 50 to take to fertility test most farmers buying a bull take the trailer with them be suprise if he had not got one. 500 to feed him for six months and 2500 for cows being empty 30 days. Even if he was tested on the day he could go infertile betwen this and breeding season. If he trys to but privatly and trys to insist on a fertility test he might find it hard to buy a bull. in most cases if you buy off farm you test your self and cannot insure for fertility unless you do.

The charlois society would have to increase there sales comission by 80+/head if testing and sellers would be relucant to allow as they then carry the risk. No matter what you do there will be losers. Maybe the onus should be on him to test, or maybe the charlois could give it as an option on the day of the sale to the new owner. the question if it cost 60/head how many would avail, unless the cert covered the bull insurance as well.

If anything it show that the Society insurance scheme is fairly fair.
