Did something similar myself a few months ago. I would recommend new cables (and maybe the cable housings too if they are old) - it makes life alot easier running them from the new shifters. Do you have a good wire cutter?

The new shifters should fit onto the old (SORA) clamp band so no messing with the handlebar required, unless you are changing the cable housings too.

There are plenty of YouTube videos showing how to do it.

All in all it took less than 1 hour not including an emergency trip to the lbs for new cables (cause I reckoned the old ones would work OK - they didn't, as the ends started unravelling when threading them through the housings) - they also threw in a fistful of Ferules too which was cool

One thing the lbs recommended was to put a big glob (excuse the technical term :o) of grease on the end of the housing then run the new cable through it and through the housing - it did a nice job of pulling the grease through both the cable and the housing.

Oh yeah, you will have to reindex the gears too

And most importantly ONLY CUT THE CABLES WHEN THE JOB IS COMPLETELY FINISHED (including gear indexing and brake setting)
