I'd like to be able to offer the option on a WordPress site to allow visitors to select a specific language eg french. It is only the static content I'm interested in translating.
Can anyone recommend a plugin or approach?

WPML works well with wide theme support, but it's now a commercial plugin looking for an annual support charge. http://wpml.org/purchase/

It supports language specific text, images, navigation and attachments.

But the big saving is being able to sensibly examine all the text from your site and package it into a file that can be sent to translators, completed and re-imported.

Thanks for that. I came across that plugin but thought it might be over kill for a small website.
