We've been having on-going issues with this car since it chewed its timing belt a couple of years ago and now it looks like the head gasket was not done properly as its leaking oil from the top end of the engine, I've been told its not a major issue as long as i keep topping up with oil but I want to fix it.

I just got a new belt, water pump and tensioner done at christmas and have been told it would cost about 600-650 euro to get the head gasket done.

Whats envolved in doing this job, is it a dark science to fix this issue or could anyone do it with the right tools.

Also at this stage would it be cheaper in the long run to put a new/second hand engine in it?

Almost all of those engines leak oil from the head gasket so a secondhand engine is unlikely to get you out of trouble.

€600 is a bit on the high side IMO for a head gasket job when the timing belt kit and water pump are relatively new and won't need replacing. You should be able to get it done a good bit cheaper than that. Any competent garage should be able to do it for you.

The same engine in the early Citroen C4's leaked oil from the head gasket too, but once done, it never happened again. IIRC most happened when quite new and were repaired under warranty. It's an shame really because this issue apart, those are otherwise quite good engines.

yea in fairness I thought it was a bit steep George, I'll shop around a bit and maybe buy the parts myself would it be a nuts job to attempt myself with very little exp, I've two weeks gardening leave at the min..till I start a new job so plenty of time on my hands.

There are a few potential pitfalls with these because of the way the cooling system needs to be bled and also with the variable valve timing so it might not be a great guinea pig if you haven't done a head gasket before :D

The price of the tools to do the job is also worth considering if your doing it just to save money. You might save FA depending on what you have already.

The timing belt and HG would be alot to take on together but with a good workshop manual and plenty of time and patience. Give yourself 3 or 4 days to do it. From experience 8 hour days in the driveway have lead to mistakes.
