    Lads,

    Quick request for help/guidance.

This Omega is on my wish list and the asking price is within my budget.

    Short link: http://www.adverts.ie/2771335

I'd be nervous buying something not new without a strong recommendation or confirmation as to authenticity.

I would be really grateful for a some advise here.

Apologies mods if I have posted this in the wrong place.

    Thanks.

    TbL

The issue I have with this is that the pictures are brutal. A nice clear front on picture would help as would a picture of the movement and most importantly a pic of the inside of the case back. That would allow us to validate that the movement is in good condition and that the case matches the movement and strap.
    But....
The helium valve is in the correct place.
The strap is a genuine omega.
The crown looks right but not 100% sure as no proper side profile picture.
The presense of papers, receipt and original box is a good sign. Collectors like that.
Watch appears to have few scratches aside from the usual desk driving marks.
He is looking for top price too but if you can validate that the papers match the watch movement, case and strap then you have a good un in my opinion.

    @Trigger Happy,

Many thanks for taking the time to help and the detailed reply.

    I'll ask for more pictures.

Do you know if you can walk in off the street and ask a jeweller to confirm authenticity (obviously paying for the service)

    Much appreciated.

I wonder why Safari on the iPhone cannot open adverts.ie?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,318 ✭✭✭✭Menas

You could do, an authorised dealer is your best bet if you want to be 100% sure.
But good pics and the movement and case number should suffice to allow us to give you a 99% opinion. There is an omega database that is publicaly available to check once you have these numbers.

I don't have the link on me right now but google it and you will find it. Post the number here and I will happily check it for you.

Is 1300 really top dollar for one of them? I'd have thought a quartz in good condition could fetch that sort of price.

Off topic, but some of the stupid offers on that advert are exactly why I hate selling stuff there. It might be shooting myself in the foot, but I'd rather just flog my stuff on Fleabay and not deal with the adverts.ie chancers.

It keeps opening the adverts.ie app on mine, which annoys me.

If its the Casion Royal ltd version for €3500 I think it's over priced. You can get pre-owned 8500 movement of the same Planet Ocean for around the same money with a superior movement. I have the regular version of the 2500 movement and its a great watch.

No, it's a different one - the asking price is 1300 (link in the first post - edit, which you just said you can't open!)

An. That's actually a pretty good price for the auto. Ask the seller if he would agree to meet at an authorised Omega dealer to confirm its authenticity. If all the paperwork is in order then I'd go for it at €1300, I've seen them sell for £1300 on TZ-UK.

Yeah agree with the lads. You would need better pictures before you make any decisions. Its 7 years old and there is no mention of a service. You should factor the cost of that into your decision also.

I'd really love if someone would buy me one of these too, just saying....

The pictures are not great for such a nice watch. They should have at least made sure the outer bezel was lined up with the 12 position

The seller should have no problem taking a few more good ones if you were to ask

That Omega looks the real deal, bit banged up but not a bad price.

    Lads,

Thanks to all for the advice/input.

I'm probably gonna run with this.

    Apologies for the novice queries but I might be in Dublin next week, so can anyone advise;

where I could take the watch to have it authenticated, would I have to make an appointment or can I just walk in off the street, and how much would such an inspection cost? How long would the inspection take as I'll only be in the big smoke for the day.

    Appreciate your time.

If you open the caseback you could authenticate it in a second. The watch body at least, I'd be certain it's legit. If the receipt matched up I'd be happy.

If your interested there is a full size quartz version on TZUK for less than £700 sterling.

    Thanks Bullseye,

Despite knowing feck all about watches this forum is partly to blame for me becoming something of a watch snob and I don't think I could spend £700 on a quartz:)

Doesn't stand up to logical scrutiny but that's the way my thought process has evolved since I signed up here

Still trying to slowly pick up the basics and the article that Deep Thought referenced in this thread was very interesting, although I found all the terminology a little overwhelming

Understandable. I try and buy mechanical when the model is available but for some people quartz is fine.

I've a quartz that cost a few thousand and think it's ace! :)

The fact that nature left us a mineral that tells the time appeals to me as much as having some Chinese guy filing down parts to fit into a Swiss made watch ... !!! :)

    Lads,

Thanks for all the inputs, doesn't look like ill get the watch, seller thinks I've changed the goal posts.

Special word of thanks to Trigger Happy, very obliging/helpful.

Half of the fun in getting a new watch is the shopping for it!

on this, dont bother, the sales guys in somewhere like weirs havent any better knowledge than someone on here and unless they are going to get a watchmaker to open the back, their verification is worthless
