Macro lens: EF 180mm f3.5 L USM or MP-E 65mm 2.8 1-5x

    I am considering the EF 180mm f3.5 L USM or MP-E 65mm 2.8 1-5x for a my Canon EOS 60D but I can't make up my mind.

The MP-E lens is cheaper but only good for macro. Does anyone here have this lens and use it for photographing insects and other easily scared creatures? I have seen some amazing pictures taken with this lens but is it hard to get close enough without scaring the subject?

The EF lens is 180mm so I can shoot at greater distances and also use it for portraits and other subjects. I also get extra reach with my crop sensor compared to full frame sensors.

different lenses are ideal for different situations the mp-E65 is a manual focus lens and very difficult to master - but can produce absolutely amazing images.

the 180mm is a better lens for animals which will be startled and likely to move on but the mp-e65 is best for detail in the macro (ie. wing details etc).

As you said the 180mm is also capable of usage outside of macro work.

The 180mm is slow to focus but is completely silent....from using the mp-e65 I would think it needs a macro light attached when using it - as sometimes you get so close to the subject that you block out the available light.

Perhaps I should try before I buy. Does anyone know if there are any places in Cork or Dublin renting such lenses?

Conns rent lenses and if you buy they take the rental off the price (check to confirm)
