Ladies Racing summer series at Corkagh Park returns on Tuesday May 28th, and runs each Tuesday until Aug 27th. Building on the success of the 2012 series and the Wheelworx Orwell Ladies Crit League, this offers women the chance to race in their ability groups in a traffic free environment, all for a whopping EUR3 per night!

Where: Corkagh Park, near Newlands Cross, Dublin
The races will be held at the purpose built closed-road circuit at Corkagh Park, near Clondalkin each Tuesday evening with sign-on at the track from 6.30pm. Depending on numbers, the races will follow the same format as the Crit League rounds with A and B races starting at 7pm & 7.30pm respectively. Groups will be updated on a weekly basis. The races last about 35 minutes.

Who: The races are open to female riders of all fitness and ability levels including beginners, youths and juniors. With expert advice on hand, this series is aimed at those interested in getting into racing for the first time and will be great for improving fitness, cornering and bunch skills. With its handicapped format, the races will also offer good hard racing for more experienced riders.

What: A properly serviced racing bike and correctly fitted helmet are essential. For safety reasons, we cannot allow hybrid, MTB, commuter, BMX or similar bikes on the circuit for racing. Those riding to and from the races should remember to bring lights and reflective gear as it will be getting dark after the races. Goodies and drinks for sharing after the races are always very welcome.

Details: Entry is €3 per night for Seniors and €1 for Underage. Either a Cycling Ireland Full Competition or Club Competition Licence or IVCA racing licence is required. Sorry, no 1-day licences available due to CI rules changes, but you can contact info@cyclingireland.ie to upgrade.

A number of Leinster-based Clubs have kindly volunteered to host these races; details will be updated as we confirm them.

I've really enjoyed the Women's Crit League in Sandyford, even if I've had my ass handed to me on both times that I've attempted to race.

I haven't had quite enough suffering though and I'll certainly try to get to some of these. I might actually finish in the bunch next time!

When you say it's suitable for beginners, what level of experience/inexperience are we talking about? :)

    Hi Amz,
We group the riders on ability, including people who have never raced before. You'll be matched with people of the same ability (about 5-7 in total), and you're given a head-start ahead of the other groups.

It's similar to group spins (e.g with a club or training group) but slightly faster. You'll need to have a road bike (aka racer) as for safety reasons we can't have flat-bars in group riding.

The circuit at Corkagh Park is a 1.1km loop, and is closed off from other park users and traffic, and it's a very safe place to learn to race. The series is intended for people who have never raced before, and we expect to have quite a few newbie racers again this summer, so you'll be in good company!

    Cool, thanks.

Have the bike, just need to get out and get stuck in.

How many laps per race, or will it vary?

The first few weeks are about 12 laps for the new racing group, and it'll build up gradually over the course of the summer as people get more experienced.

Also send an email to info@cyclingireland.ie if you're unsure if you have a licence for club racing (which required by CI), and we'll see you out there!

We're delighted to confirm that Paddy Doran will be joining us next Tuesday to start the CP series with a coached session - details here:

Corkagh Park Ladies Racing kicks off on Tuesday 28th May, with a racing skills session. If you would like to try out racing, or improve on your crit performance, this is the session for you! We will be joined by Paddy Doran, one of Ireland’s top coaches, for a ~2 hour session on gearing, cornering, pack riding and other essential racing skills. We’ll also discuss the importance of how to train effectively for continued improvement.

The session starts at 7pm at the Corkagh Park cycling circuit, and costs EUR5. Please share with clubmates and friends/family who might be leisure/sportive/triathlon riders and would like to try out racing in a safe, traffic-free environment with a coach. It’s also suitable for those with some race experience who want to hone their skills further.

Regular racing will be back on Tuesday, June 4th. Any questions, please post below.

Went along to this last night, despite not intending to (I'm definitely not a racer), but a friend suggested I'd learn something new from Paddy Doran and within 5 mins that came true.

He made us all (about 30 women) remove our back wheels from our bikes and count the teeth on our cassettes and chain rings, he then told us all about different gear set ups, which set up was most and least useful in racing.

It was a great evening, the weather held out and I didn't finish last.
There was some complete beginners there (for one girl it was her 4th time out on her bike since she was a kid) and there were the more experienced cyclists there too.
I'd advise any woman who thinks they'd like to cycle fast around a course against other women to give this a go and go along on a Tues evening.
Thanks to all involved for orgainising yet another great event for women's cycling in Dublin.
